Marriage of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati on ShivratriMaha Shivaratri was the day when Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati got married again. Lord Shiva was first married to Sati, the daughter of Daksha. Daksha used to dislike Lord Shiva and therefore, he insulted him during a Yagna. Sati couldn't bear the insult of her husband and jumped into the fire of Yagna, sacrificing her life. She then took rebirth as Maa Parvati and again got married to Shiva. This day is celebrated as Maha Shivratri.

Origin of Shiva from Lingam According to the ancient stories, once Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma were having an argument as who between the two was greater. Suddenly a pillar of light arose from nowhere. Both the Lords started discussing about the light and its size, but none got success. At that moment, Lord Shiva came out from the Lingam of light, as the progenitor of both of them. Since then, this day is celebrated as Mahashivratri, as the day when Shiva appeared from the Lingam of light.

According to the beliefs, fast should be observed during the period of Chaturdashi. Therefore, you should observe full day fasting on February 28th, 2014 also, until dusk.
