Religious importance of Onam

Onam is a festival of devotion and has immense religious importance associated with it. It is firmly believed that King Mahabali (the ruler of all the three lokas- dharti loka, patal loka, and swarga loka) visits his people on this day. In order to welcome him and honour his arrival, the Keralites celebrate the day with full enthusiasm and devotion. Also, it was also on the day of Thiruvonam that Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Vamana.
