Shravan Month Dearest To Bholenath

According to the beliefs in Hinduism, Sawan Somvar Vrat observed and donations made during the month of Sawan appease Lord Shiva. Many mythological stories are heard in this context. According to one of them, it is said that Maa Parvati observed a difficult fast without any food or water in the month of Sawan to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Her efforts made the Lord happy, and he married her. Hence, it is believed that any unmarried girl who observes the Sawan Somvar fast throughout the month gets blessed with a husband like Lord Shiva.

Another mythological story states that in this month itself, Lord Shiva appeared on the Earth and decided to visit his in-laws, where he was welcomed in a grand style with Jalabhishek etc. Hence, from that day itself, it is believed that the Lord himself comes on the Earth and visits his in-laws. In this duration, his devotees worship the Lord and can attain his blessings.

Importance of Sawan Somvar Vrat

It is mentioned in the scriptures that whosoever worships Lord Shiva with utter devotion and passion in the month of Sawan attains his blessings. It is also believed that married women fasting in this month can make their marital life prosperous, whereas unmarried girls can attain a desirable match. Also, devotees worshipping and fasting in this month get blessed with longevity.
Kanwar and Jhanda Yatra Begins With Sawan Month

With the commencement of the Sawan month, the devotees of Lord Shiva embark on a religious journey called Kanwar & Jhanda Yatra. On this occasion, devotees, also called as kanwarias, fill their Kanwar, a small vessel, with water from the banks of Narmada and use it to perform the ceremony of Jalabhishek on Shivling in Shiva’s temple. In this month, the Kanwarias can be seen hailing the Lord while walking down the road with their kanwars. Similarly, in the Sharda Mandir Madan Mahal, the tradition of offering flags on the day of Sawan Somvar is followed.
