Sharad Purnima 2014: Muhurat

The most important aspect of any Hindu festival is Muhurat. Firstly before anything else, let’s find out the Muhurat of this auspicious day:

Purnima Tithi is beginning on October 7, 2014 at 07:13 pm and ending on October 8, 2014 at 04:20 pm.

The Muhurat for Sharad Purnima is from 11:44 to 00:33 am.

About Sharad Purnima

Sharad Purnima is celebrated in the Shukla Paksha (bright half) of Ashvin month. Sharad Purnima is also known as ‘Kojagiri Purnima’, ‘Kumar Purnima’, or ‘Raas Purnima’. As the name suggests, this festival is celebrated on the Purnima (Full Moon Day) in the month of October. Sharad purnima marks the end of the monsoon season.

It is believed that the earth and the Moon are closest to each other on this auspicious day, and the rays of the Moon are considered to have healing properties or curative properties that are very beneficial for us.

Sharad Purnima 2014: Rituals To Be Followed

1. Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Indra on Erawat Elephant (White Elephant) are worshipped on this occasion.
2. The Shloka or Mantra to be chanted during the Lakshmi Puja is: “Om Lakshmaya Namah”
3. For Indra Puja the Mantra to be chanted is: “Indraya Namah”
4. Kheer (sweet rice porridge) should be specially made for this Puja and should be kept in a silver vessel.
5. The Kheer should be kept under the direct moonlight, and should be consumed the next day.
6. All the idols of Gods should be cleaned and dressed up in new clothes on this day.
7. The Puja should be carried out with flowers and Diyas.
8. A Purnima fast is also observed on this day and it shall be ended by reciting the story of Sharad Purnima.
9. During the time of recitation, Kalash should be kept filled with water.
10. Along with this, a glass filled with wheat and bowls containing Roli (vermilion) and rice should be kept.
11. Those who perform this Pooja stay awake all night, as it is believed that Goddess Laxmi and Lord Indra bless those who stay awake all night.

Sharad Purnima: Importance Of The Day

1. On this day, mothers observe fast for the well-being of their kids.
2. In general, the fast observed on this day is to gain wealth, as it is believed that those who perform this Pooja get blessed by Goddess Lakshmi.
3. This day is also considered very auspicious for buying any new vehicle.

Dussehra is the festival that conveys the message that immorality or evil always face defeat from the powers of goodness. Being a popular festival with celebration throughout the country, Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashmi or Dashain. Dussehra 2014 Puja Muhurat:

Durga Visarjan 2014 Puja Muhurat:

• Durga Visarjan 2014 Muhurat: 06:13 pm - 07:24 pm

Durgotsav is a 5 day long celebration that is mainly celebrated in Bengal and some parts of South India as well. Durgotsav ends with immersion of Durga idols in ponds, rivers, or lakes and this tradition is known as Durga Visarjan. Durga Visarjan and Dussehra are celebrated on the same day, i.e. on the tenth day of Sharad Navratri.

Durgotsav is celebrated in the context of victory of Maa Durga over the demon Mahishasura. If we go by ancient legends, Maa Durga was engaged in a fight with Mahishasura, which lasted for a period for nine days. Mahishasura was killed by Durga on Vijaya Dashami (the tenth day) and she freed mankind, ultimately from the evil clutches of Asura.

Let’s now take a look on the legends of Dussehra and Durgotsav:

Dussehra: Victory Of Lord Rama - Legend

Lord Vishnu incarnated himself on earth as Lord Rama, to destroy demon Ravana. Shri Ram entered into a fight with Ravana accompanied by Lord Hanuman, his brother Lakshman and Vanar Sena (army of monkeys). It all happened when Ravana kidnapped Mata Sita and imprisoned her in his palace, Lanka.

Lord Rama successfully defeated Ravana and released his wife Sita from his clutches. Ravana was killed by Lord Rama on the day of Dussehra. Along with the demon Ravana, Lord Rama destroyed aggravation, depravity and evil from earth.

Durgotsav: Victory Of Maa Durga - Legend

Maa Durga was created by the divine energies of Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara. Durga Mata. She was brought to life to demolish Mahishasura and save people from his tormenting reign.

Mahishasura was a demon who was spreading immorality and crime all around by killing innocent people. He also wanted to take over the powers and kingdom of Gods. Maa Durga entered into a fight with Mahishasura and destroyed him successfully, on the day of Dussehra or Durgotsav.

Dussehra Celebrations & Puja

Dussehra is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. Ramlila, which is a nine day long theoretical representation of Lord Rama’s life is organized at different places around the city for the spiritual awakening of people. In the Kundali of Lal Bahadur Shastri, Mercury being exalted is posited in tenth house, i.e. the house of sovereignty. Such a position gives him the knowledge of clean politics. About Goddess Mahagauri

During Navratri, she is worshipped on the eighth day i.e. Ashtami. It is believed that planet Rahu is governed by Goddess Mahagauri. She rides a bull, that’s why she is also called Vrisharudha. Maa Mahagauri has four hands. One right hand holds trident and the other hand holds Abhaya Mudra. She holds Damaru in one left hand and second left hand holds Varada Mudra.

About Goddess Siddhidatri

Goddess Siddhidatri is the visual form of Adi-Parashakti. As per the beliefs, Rudra had worshiped Adi-Parashakti for the creation of universe. As she didn’t have any form, she emerged from the left half of Shiva (Rudra) as Goddess Siddhidatri. Since then, Lord Shiva is also known as Ardh-Narishwara. She is the Supreme Goddess, who holds all the power of this creation.

During Navratri, Goddess Siddhidatri is worshiped on the ninth day. She is the power who drives the force of Ketu and also provides him path. Hence, Ketu is ruled by her. Her appearance is very royal. If she sits, her couch is a beautiful lotus; if she travels, lion is her chariot. She has four arms. One right arm holds Gada, other one holds Chakra; one left hand carries lotus and other one is adorned with conch.


Worshiping the Supreme Goddess can adorn you with all the grace of this universe; you will own all the powers and be spiritually enlightened. Lord Shiva also got all his Siddhis from her. Goddess Kalratri has an extremely dreadful appearance with dark complexion. All the negativity gets washed away only by the view of her appearance. She has big red eyes and scattered long black hair. Goddess Kalratri has four hands, out of which, she has a sabre (Kripan) in her upper left hand and an iron thorn in her lower left hand. Her upper right hand remains in Var Mudra and lower right hand in Abhay Mudra. Maa Kalratri rides on a donkey. She removes every kind of fear and destroy evils and negative powers from the universe. Goddess Kalratri killed the wicked devil Raktabeej.

Puja Vidhi Of The Day

The rituals to worship Goddess Kalratri are same as the other eight Goddesses of Navratri. The rituals start with worshiping the Kalash. The Kalash is worshiped with all the planets and family members of the Goddess. It is said that Goddess Kalratri removes all the effects of negative powers.

Seventh day of Navratri is also very important for Tantriks, they perform special Pujas to attain Siddhis. They worship Goddess Kalratri in the midnight with all their Tantrik rituals.

Third Day of Durga Puja

About Goddess Katyayani

Maa Katyayani is depicted as having three eyes and four hands. She holds a sword in her upper left hand, while a lotus flower is seen placed in her lower left hand. Now, let’s talk about her right hand portion. Maa Katyayani right side half shows a calmer positioning; her upper right hand and lower right hand are in protecting and allowing gestures, respectively. Maa Katyayani was born to Sage Katyayan, after he voluntarily held a penance to beget Maa Durga as his daughter. Hence, she is known as Maa Katyayani. The sixth day of Navratri is also considered to be very important by the Sadhaks, as this day is believed to be the appropriate one to observe spiritual practices. It is also believed that if a strict penance is followed to please Maa Katyayani by women who is facing delays in her marriage, Maa definitely eliminates such hurdles.

Puja Vidhi Of The Day

Talking about the sixth day of Navratri, the same rituals will be followed this day as in the other days of Navratri. It is said that worshiping Devi Katyayani helps a follower attain Dharma, Kama, Moksha, Artha. The rituals start with worshiping the Kalash. It is believed that Gods reside inside the Kalash, hence, worshiping of Kalash is considered to be of such high auspiciousness. After this, the family members of Devi are venerated.

The Puja Vidhi or rituals of worshiping Goddess Katyayani is almost the same as observed to venerate other forms of Nav Durga on other days of the Navratras.

Second Day Of Durga Puja

Today is the second day of Durga Puja, also known as Maha Shashthi. On this day, Bodhon rituals are conducted. In this, the face of Goddess Durga is unveiled in front of the followers. On this day, Durga Mata is formally welcomed to her parents’ house.

Maha Shashthi rituals take place in four stages:

1. Kalparamba: This is the beginning phase of the Pujas
2. Bodhan: This is the phase where Durga Devi is consecrated during Durga Puja
3. Amantran: Goddess Durga is invited to earth at this phase, and
4. Adhivas: Purification of Durga Maa idols takes place now, when idols of the deity are set up in different Pandals (temporary structures)
