Vrat katha for Sharad Purnima

In old times, two daughters of a sahukar used to observe fast on full moon day of every month to please Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. The elder daughter accepted the norms of fasting and took great care to follow them. On the contrary, the younger one, though kept the fast, did not follow the rules for fasting as for her they were not significant. When they were of appropriate age, their father arranged their marriage with suitable matches. They both conceived and the elder one gave birth to a healthy child. While, the child born of the younger sister could not survive. This happened a couple of times before the younger sister decided to seek the advice of a brahmin.

She asked the spiritual guru for a solution to her problem. The religious brahmin in no time could understand that since she never completed the fast of purnima with all its rules, she is suffering from dosha. After listening to this, she decided to complete the fast with all the rules. Soon after she decided so, a son was born of her, but just like the previous children, he too died. She took the body of her son, wrapped it in a piece of cloth and kept it on a wooden platform so nobody doubts it.

The younger sister invited her elder sister to her home. She then offered the same wooden platform to her, to sit upon, on which the dead baby boy was kept by her. When the elder sister was about to sit, her saree touched the baby and it started crying. Seeing this, the elder sister was angry as she believed that the baby could have died if she accidentally sat on him.

Her sister also started weeping and told the whole story to her sister. She revealed the secret of the baby being dead along with what the brahmin had told her. Also, she thanked the elder one as her touch revived a dead child. The fast she kept on every full moon blessed her with god’s grace and she could turn an impossible into possible. The younger sister then decided to complete the purnima fast with utmost care from the very day. Just like her elder sister, she also got results for her fast and started singing praises of purnima fast in the whole city.

Why Chandra Darshan is prohibited during Ganesh Chaturthi?

It is believed that a person should not see Moon during Ganesh Chaturthi. The reason being that Chandra Darshan may cause Mithya Kalank to a person, i.e. she/he may charged with false allegations without any reason. As per religious texts, Lord Krishna also became the victim of falsehood (Mithya) due to Chandra Darshan. But what is the reason behind this belief?

On the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, there is an ancient story about Chandra Darshan. According to this myth, Lord Ganesha cursed Chandra on the day of Chaturthi, and this is the reason why seeing Moon on this day is prohibited. If anyone sees Moon by mistake, then there is a description of Chandra Darshan Dosh Nivaran Mantra in Vedic scriptures. One can chant this Mantra 28, 54 or 108 times to avoid the harmful effects of Chandra Darshan. Additionally, reading the 57th chapter of 10th part (Skanda) of Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta also results in eliminating Chandra Darshan Dosha.

Chandra Darshan Dosh Nivaran Mantra

Simha Prasenam Vadhita, Simho Jambavata Hatah।
Sukumarak Ma Rodistava, Hrosh Isyamantakah।।

Renowned astrologers and wise scholars believed that worshipping Lord Ganesha is highly felicitous for a person. And, if you are affected by the malefic effects of Planet Saturn, or Shani Dasha is creating obstacles for you, enemies are distressing you, or if there are chances of an accident, etc, then ruminating the name of Shree Ganesh devotedly will eliminate all the pains and problems in your life.

On this occasion, Shiv Parvati idols made of clay or sand are worshipped. Since, this is a Nirjala Vrat (without water), therefore, the devotees should only offer fruits to the deities. At night, Jagrans and Bhajans are performed to worship Parvati Maa and Bhagwan Shankar. This fast of Hartalika Teej is completed after immersion of Puja material (Samagri) in the morning, the next day.

Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha and Significance

According to religious beliefs, Parvati ji performed difficult austerity to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Seeing her condition, her father Parvat Raj Himalaya was very sad. Meanwhile, Narada Muni brought the marriage proposal for Maa Parvati on behalf of Lord Vishnu. When the Goddess heard about this, she became upset. After being asked by one of her friends, Parvati told them that she’s performing penance to get God Shiva as her husband. After this, her friends took the Goddess to the forest. Since then, the festival is known by the name of Hartalika Teej, as Maa Parvati was abducted by her friends, so that she could achieve her goal to marry Bhagwan Shankar.

Here, the word Hartalika comprises “Harat”, which means abduction, and “Talika” that signifies female friends. After taken to the forest, Goddess performed severe austerity. On the Tritiya of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha during Hasta Nakshatra, the Goddess created the idol of Lord Shiva with sand and worshipped him with complete devotion. Pleased with her sincerity and Puja, Lord Shiva accepted her as his wife as desired by Mata Parvati.

Thus, performing this fast with utmost devotion, and worshipping Shiv Parvati while following all Puja rituals sincerely, blesses a girl or women with luck and prosperity. This is the reason why Hartalika Teej Vrat and festival is of high significance for girls and married women.

Fasts such as Karwa Chauth, Hartalika Teej, Hariyali Teej, Vat Savitri Vrat and Kajari Teej are among the most important fasts for women.

According to Hindu Panchang, fast for Kajari Teej is performed on Tritiya (third day) of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. However, as per Gregorian Calendar, this festival falls in the month of July or August. This year, the festival is occuring today on August 29, and will be celebrated by women across the country with devotion and enthusiasm. However, it is mainly celebrated in Hindu states of the country including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. This festival is also known by the name of Kajali Teej. Goddess Neemdi or Neemdi Mata is worshipped on this day. Married women fast on this occasion for longevity of their husbands. Additionally, unmarried girls also fast on this day to get blessed with a right and suitable husband.

Vrat Rituals on Kajari Teej

  • Like Karva Chauth, this fast is also performed without drinking water (Nirjala Vrat). Although, pregnant women may have fruits on this day.
  • Usually the fast is opened by looking at the Moon as per rituals. But, if it is not visible in the sky, a woman can open her fast by looking to the sky around 11:30 PM, and offering Argh to the Moon God.
  • Once the fasting rituals (Udyapan) for Kajari Teej are performed, if proper Nirjala fast is not possible by a woman in the coming years, she can have fruits.

  • Offer Argh to Moon God while holding a Silver ring and few Wheat grains in your hand. Then, circumambulate (Parikrama) 4 times on the same place in a clockwise direction.

Kajari Teej and Importance of Worshipping Cows

It is also believed that all the deities reside in Gau Mata (Cow). She is also known as Kamadhenu (a bovine Goddess, also known as the mother of fulfilment), who when worshipped brings happiness, peace and prosperity in the house. Gau Mata is especially worshipped on the occasion of Kajari Teej. The food is consumed only after feeding small round Chapatis made from flour dough along with Ghee and Gur (Jaggery) to the Cow.

Traditions related to Kajari Teej

Mythological Significance of Nag Panchami

There are some Indian mythological scriptures such as Skanda Purana, Agni Purana, Narada Purana and Mahabharata, which give information about Puja rituals for worshipping snake and also mention its religious and mythological significance. As per ancient beliefs, it is believed that the origin of snakes is associated with Lord Brahma, and that is the reason why worshipping them is considered auspicious. The son of Lord Brahma, known as Kashyapa had four wives. His first wife was the mother of all Devtas, second wife of Garudas, third wife of Nagas and fourth wife was the mother of all Asuras. The third wife of Kashyapa, named Kadroo, had given birth to Nagas. Therefore, Nagas (snakes) are also known by the name of Kadrooja.

Nine Species of Snakes (Nagas)

The Sanskrit names of 9 Great Nāgas are Anant, Vāsuki, Sheshnāg, Padmanābha, Kambala, Shankhapāla, Dhārtarāshtra, Takshaka, and Kaliya. Nag Panchami, also known as Bhratru Panchami, is the day when sisters along with their brothers worship snakes and their burrows (snake hole) to seek the blessings of snakes. Sisters performed this Puja for the well-being of their brothers, so that they do not suffer or steer clear of snake bites. This Hindu festival is also celebrated as Vishari Puja or Bishari Puja in some regions of the country, where Bisha or Visha means “poison”.

Importance of Snakes in Hindu Religion and Vedic Astrology

India has always been known as the land of snake worshippers and snakes. People of India celebrates the festival of Nag Panchami in honor of serpents and snakes. During the festival of Nag Panchami, people wash the snakes with milk ensuring their families safety from danger of snakes.

It is believed that snakes are imbibed with more powers than humans. The connection of snakes with Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Subramanya, shows their religious significance and hence, shows the devotion of Hindus towards cobra and other snakes throughout the country. The relation of snake with Moon nodes in Hindu astrology is known for more than one reason. It is believed that the tail of the snake is considered as Ketu (Dragon’s tail) and the head as Rahu (Dragon’s head). If seven planets of an individual are surrounded between Rahu and Ketu in reverse order, it is said that the person has Kalasarpa Dosha or defect due to black snakes in his Zodiac Chart. It brings bad luck and hardship in an individual’s life. Therefore, it can be rectified by worshipping the snakes on the day of Nag Panchami.

Celebration of Nag Panchami in Different States

In the state of Maharashtra, there is a city called Nagpur where snakes have special eminence. The name of the city is derived from the word Naga (means snake) as the place or the place is full of snakes. Mahal area in Nagpur has a temple called Nagoba, where worshippers offer special prayers to snakes on Nag Panchami day. It is said that the temple was found under the Neem tree, known as “Nagoba ka vota”.

In Banaras (Varanasi), Akharas (where wrestling practice has been performed) are decorated on the day of Nag Panchami. Additionally, Akharas are cleaned and painted with images of snakes, priests, and the gurus. Here, the festival is important as wrestlers are the symbol of virility and Naga symbolizes the “scheme of virility”. Therefore, the decoration of Akharas and images of snake shows snakes drinking milk.

In Kashmir, snakes have been worshipped by Hindu people from a very long time. In north eastern states such as Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Assam, Goddess Manasa Devi is worshipped on this occasion. In Hindu mythology, Manasa Devi is considered the Queen of Snakes and sister of Vasuki. She is also believed to be the Snake Goddess, Jaratkaru, the same snake that was wrapped around Mandarachal mountain during Samudra Manthan. In Maharashtra, devotees go round the burrows (snake hole) and sing songs in praise of snake gods. Furthermore, Manasa plant symbolizing the Goddess Mansa is also worshipped on this day. It is not only worshiped in the month of Shravan, but also in the month of Bhadra.

In Karnataka, the preparation for the festival starts on the New Moon day of Bhima Amavasya, which is five days prior to the festival of Panchami. The festival is celebrated within the boundaries of the house. The devotees offer raw milk and green Bananas. Girls offer prayers to the images made with white clay and painted with white dots. During the ritual, they offer prayers and take a vow by tying a thread dipped in turmeric paste on their right wrist. An image of snake is drawn on the floor in front of the house and milk is offered as a religious offering. Before one night of the festival, they complete the fast or take a salt free diet. After Puja, a delicious feast is held.

It is observed that if Nag-Panchami is celebrated every year with devotion and gaiety, then snakes bestow the person with good health, wealth and happiness. However, if snakes are unhappy or angry, they make you sick and no medicine can heal your from pain or suffering.
