Hariyali Teej Today, know About Shiva and Parvati’s Sacred Bond

How did Goddess Parvati sway Lord Shiva? Hariyali Teej also known as Shravani Teej or Sawan Teej commences on the third day of the Shukla Paksha of the Shravan month ( month of July or August ) according to Hindu calendar. 

The festival is celebrated in the name of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. The sacred writings depicts that this day is celebrated on the eve of reconciliation of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This festival has special importance in every woman's life as they sincerely perform the vrat and seek blessings for the betterment of their married life and unmarried women for getting their desired life partner. This day tells us about the strength, beauty, endearment and purity of love among the two divine couple. The day is celebrated with full of enthusiastic activities, cultural programs and processions all over the country. 

Traditions acquainted with Hariyali Teej 

It's the most important day for the newly married one's. According to the tradition,

  1. The newly married one's visit their parents’ home for celebrating this occasion. 
  2. Before the actual day of the festival, there are also some traditions and rituals to be followed like the in-laws have to gift their daughter-in-law with clothes, accessories, mehendi, etc.
  3. The woman start getting prepped up for the next day by applying beautiful designs of mehndi on their hands and feet and also apply a red liquid called Alta on their feet which resembles the sacred conjugal bond between them.

Puja vidhi for Hariyali Teej 

  1. The first thing to do is tidying and decorating the house. 
  2. The second thing is that they have to place the idols of the God and Goddess along with others on an puja altar, decorate them and keep ready for performing the pooja vidhi. 
  3. They have to perform a ritual called Shodha Upchar for the deities. 
  4. The vrat is carried out for the whole night staying awake and doing bhajans, chanting, etc.

The rituals usually followed on Hariyali Teej are as follows:
  1. Married women receive Sinjhara from their in-laws. Sinjhara is basically a package of cosmetic and other beauty products. Women apply this products before stepping forward for Shiv Parvati Puja.
  2. Married women apply mehndi on their hands and play swings with friends. 
  3. The Puja ritual usually takes place in night, hence women celebrate this with Jagaran and Kirtan. 
Importance of Hariyali Teej

Hariyali Teej plays a very significant practice in a woman's life. They follow every ritual and pray to the gods for their wellbeing and strong relationship with their beloved. According to ancient scriptures it is said that Goddess Parvati had to perform an intense penance for 108 years to appease Lord Shiva to become his wife. And it was this day when he accepted her as his ardhangini ( better half), and hence this occasion is celebrated as Hariyali Teej.
