As per the Hindu calendar, Shivratri is a monthly festival, and celebrated a day before Purnima, which falls on Trayodashi Tithi. Shiv Teras (Masik Shivratri)

As per the Hindu Panchang, the thirteenth date of every month is known as Trayodashi (in Sanskrit). The same Panchang suggests that every month consists of two Pakshas, which are Krishna and Shukla respectively. Thus, Trayodashi falls twice in a month’s time, out of which the Trayodashi during Krishna Paksha’s thirteenth day is most dear to Lord Shiva. Since it is endeared by the Lord, this date or Tithi is associated with Mahadev since the mythical period, due to which it is called Shiv Teras or the monthly Shivratri.

Importance of Sawan Shivratri 

The festival of Shivratri falling in the month of Shravan (July-Aug) every year is also known as Kanwar Yatra Samapan Diwas (the day of concluding the Kanwar Yatra). On this day, the devotees of Shiva collect the holy water of Ganga from pious places like Haridwar, Gaumukh or Gangotri, Ganga river of Sultanganj, Kashi Vishwanath, Baidyanath, Nilkanth and Deogarh and other religious stations. The Ganga Jal is then congregated in a Kanwar and used to perform the Abhishek of Lord Shiva in the colloquial temples of the devotees. 

According to religious traditions and considerations, the month of Sawan is quite special and close to Bholenath. The Shivratri celebrated during this month is the essence and also the primary sources of positive energy. According to the Hindu Panchang, Sawan Shivratri is celebrated today, i.e. 30 July, 2019. On this particular day i.e. Tuesday, the auspicious Muhurat to commence the Shiv Puja begins at 12:06 PM at noon today and will last till Wednesday, 31 July at 12:48 PM. This fast is observed by unmarried women for 5 or 7 years consecutively, for the attainment of a husband like Lord Shiva. It is said that Goddess Parvati performed laborius austerity to achieve Bholenath as her husband. Significance of Mangla Gauri Vrat

Unmarried women observe the Mangla Gauri vrat for several reasons. Fasting on the Tuesdays of Sawan month, to appease Goddess Parvati so that she eradicates each and every obstacle, contributing to delay in their marriage. Also, it is believed that on keeping this fast one can get a husband like Lord Shiva. The same thinking follows the story which says that Goddess Parvati got married to Bholenath after performing many harsh austerities. This vrat is also very significant for the attainment of marital bliss or getting the boon of a son. Married women also pray for the longevity of their husband/son by fasting on this day. They can also ask for other luxuries. Mythology also suggests that observing the Mangala Gauri vrat eliminates the Manglik Dosha from one’s Kundli.

The Mangala Gauri vrat is observed on every Tuesday of Shravan month. Since Tuesday is known as Mangalwar in Hindi, therefore the name ‘Mangala’ and Gauri is another name for Goddess Parvati. Hence, the name: Mangala Gowri. This year, 2019, the fast will be observed on the following days:

Mangala Gowri Pooja Vidhi

There is a special significance of cosmetics used by married women (suhagan) as well as 16 things, during the Mangala Gowri Pooja. Let us begin with the samagri required during the ritual. Every Tuesday of Sawan, you will need to follow specific procedures for worshipping Goddess Gaura, and you will need the following items or samagri for the same:

1.	A stool or altar
2.	White and red cloth
3.	Kalash
4.	Diya (lamp) made of wheat dough with wicks in four directions
5.	Four wicks made of 16 cotton strands each
6.	Pious clay to make an idol of Goddess Parvati
7.	For Abhishek: water, milk, Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar blend)
8.	Clothes for Goddess Gauri, Janeu for Lord Ganesha
9.	Sacred red thread, roli or vermillion, rice, colours, gulal, turmeric, henna, kohl
10.	16 types of flowers, garlands, leaves, and fruits
11	16 ladoos made of wheat, betel leaves, betel nuts, clove, cardamom
12.	Seven types of grains
13.	16 Panchmeva (5 types of dry fruits)
14.	16 betel leaves, betel nut, cloves
15.	Suhag Pitara (including vermilion, nosepin, kohl, henna, turmeric, comb, oil, mirror, 16 bangles, toe rings, anklets, nail polish, lipstick, hairpins, and so forth)
16.	Naivedya/Prasad

1. Wake up early in the morning in Brahma Muhurta and wear clean, new clothes after taking a bath.
2. Sit facing the East direction and set the altar. On half of the altar, place the white cloth and put nine small heaps of rice over it. On the other half, place the red fabric and spread 16 little heaps of wheat over it. 
3. Now place some rice separately on the platform, and set the idol of Lord Ganesha over it, on a betel leaf, after drawing a Swastika on the leaflet. In the same way, place some wheat as well and put the Kalash over them. Put five betel leaves in the pot and place a coconut over it. Finally, place the diya (lamp) of wheat dough on the altar and light the four wicks of 16 strands.
4. Begin by worshipping Lord Ganesha, who should always be venerated first, before beginning any auspicious homage. Offer Janeu (symbolic of clothes) and roli-rice and vermilion. Similarly, venerate the Kalash and diya. Next, worship the nine heaps of rice as the Navagraha (nine planets) and the 16 heaps of wheat as the sixteen incarnations of the Goddess.

5. In a tray, take the clean and pious clay, and make an idol of Goddess Gauri with it. Now chant the following mantra, with a pure heart filled with devotion and resolve the fast:

मम पुत्रापौत्रासौभाग्यवृद्धये श्रीमंगलागौरी प्रीत्यर्थं पंचवर्षपर्यन्तं मंगलागौरी व्रतमहं करिष्ये।

Mama putrāpautrāsaubhāgyavṛddhaye śrīmaṃgalāgaurī prītyarthaṃ paṃcavarṣaparyantaṃ maṃgalāgaurī vratamahaṃ kariṣye

6. Place the idol on the altar with utmost devotion and perform its Abhishek with the Panchamrit, milk and pure water, and then dress the Goddess with the clothes.
7. Carry out the shodashopachara veneration of Goddess Gaura with roli-rice and offer her the 16 cosmetics of suhagan (married women) while chanting the following mantra:

कुंकुमागुरुलिप्तांगा सर्वाभरणभूषिताम्।

नीलकण्ठप्रियां गौरीं वन्देहं मंगलाह्वयाम्।।

kuṃkumāguruliptāṃgā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitām।

nīlakaṇṭhapriyāṃ gaurīṃ vandehaṃ maṃgalāhvayām।।

9. Next, offer her the 16 flowers, garlands, fruits, leaves, ladoos made of wheat, betel leaves, betel nut, cloves, cardamom, and Panchmeva (5 types of dry fruits).
10. Now read the complete Mangla Gauri vrat Katha (story) and do the aarti, thereafter. On every Wednesday, after concluding the fast, do the Gauri Visarjan with a pure heart, full of devotion in a lake, pond, or river.
11. Complete the fast with udyapan as per your resolution/vow. After completing the Mangala Gowri Pooja as mentioned above, do the Havan on the last Tuesday of your resolution time with your entire family. Afterwards, offer bhojan (food) to 16 married women, following the proper rituals, under the guidance of a learned priest.

Mangla Gauri Vrat Katha Summary

The story goes; there was a merchant named Dharampal. He was wealthy, was married to a beautiful woman, and they had all the comforts and luxury. However, the only thing missing in their life was a child. Therefore, they prayed to the Lord and received the boon of a son, yet, they soon came to know that the child will live for a very short duration and may die as soon as he reaches his 16th year. By God’s grace, their son was married before his sixteenth birthday to a girl, whose mother always kept the Mangala Gauri Vrat. While keeping this fast, the mother asked for the boon that her daughter will never become a widow. As a result, after marriage, instead of dying at 16 years of age, Dharampal’s son lived a happy and hearty life for 100 years. Thus, the Hindu scriptures state that one should observe the Mangala Gauri fast devotedly. Doing so brings marital happiness, the boon of sons and grandsons, longevity of husband/son, and fulfilment of all wishes in the lives of the natives.
