According to the Hindu Panchang, the fifth month from the Chaitra month every year is called Shravan month. On the other hand, in the English Calendar, the month of Sawan comes in July or August. Sawan Somvar Vrat & Puja Rituals
The month of Sawan isn’t less than a festival for the devotees of Lord Shiva. They worship the Mahadev every Monday in this sacred month and fast on that day to attain his blessings. A flock of devotees line up at the Jyotirlingas, Shivalayas and temples to get a glimpse of their loving Bholenath and worship him with utter devotion. This is why these places are beautifully decorated. Now, let’s read the puja and vrat rituals to be performed during the Shiv Puja and Sawan month:
- When Sawan month begins, wake up early in the morning, take a shower and put on fresh clothes.
- Clean the altar and the area around it.
- After this, if there’s a temple around your house, visit it and do the abhishek of Lord Shiva with milk and water.
- After this, apply a sandalwood tilak on the idol of Lord Shiva and Shivling, chant the mantra “ऊं नम: शिवाय / ūṃ nama: śivāya” and offer him supari or betel, panchamrit, coconut, bel leaves, dhatura, flowers, fruits etc.
- Then, light a diya using Ghee or Oil.
- After this, sit with closed eyes and folded hands in front of the Lord and conclude for the fast.
- Then, Katha or story and Shiv Chalisa must be recited, and Mangal Aarti must be done.
- Worship the Shivling on the day of fast.
- After getting over with your puja in the evening, conclude your fast and consume Sattvic food.

Shravan Month Dearest To Bholenath
According to the beliefs in Hinduism, Sawan Somvar Vrat observed and donations made during the month of Sawan appease Lord Shiva. Many mythological stories are heard in this context. According to one of them, it is said that Maa Parvati observed a difficult fast without any food or water in the month of Sawan to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Her efforts made the Lord happy, and he married her. Hence, it is believed that any unmarried girl who observes the Sawan Somvar fast throughout the month gets blessed with a husband like Lord Shiva.
Another mythological story states that in this month itself, Lord Shiva appeared on the Earth and decided to visit his in-laws, where he was welcomed in a grand style with Jalabhishek etc. Hence, from that day itself, it is believed that the Lord himself comes on the Earth and visits his in-laws. Kanwar and Jhanda Yatra Begins With Sawan Month
With the commencement of the Sawan month, the devotees of Lord Shiva embark on a religious journey called Kanwar & Jhanda Yatra. On this occasion, devotees, also called as kanwarias, fill their Kanwar, a small vessel, with water from the banks of Narmada and use it to perform the ceremony of Jalabhishek on Shivling in Shiva’s temple. In this month, the Kanwarias can be seen hailing the Lord while walking down the road with their kanwars. Similarly, in the Sharda Mandir Madan Mahal, the tradition of offering flags on the day of Sawan Somvar is followed. For this, long branches of Bamboo are painted and decorated, the flag is tied to one end of the pole and then offered to the temple.
