As per the Hindu calendar, Sakat Chauth in 2014 is on 19th January. Fast is observed by the married women and prayers are made to Lord Ganesha, Goddess Sakat and Moon. For the Tamil Hindus, the day is observed by the name of Sankatahara Chaturthi or Ganesh Sankatahara.

Sakat Chauth Story

Once there was a potter in a village who used to make very beautiful pots. After making the pots, he used to harden them in a kiln (furnace). Once, while putting the pots in kiln, he noticed that the flame was not able to ripen them. After listening to Rajpurohit, King decreed that each family should offer one child whenever kiln is prepared. All families, one by one, started giving one of the children to obey decree of the King. After trying multiple times he failed to ripe the kiln. At last he got fed up and went to the king for help. The king in order to help the potter called the Rajpurohit (royal pandit) and asked him for some solution. On this, Rajpurohit suggested the potter to offer Bali of a child, before preparing any kiln. 

The potter agreed to the Rajpurohit and followed his suggestion. One day, it was the turn of an old lady who had only one son. Coincidently, it was Sakat Chauth on that same day and the lady was scared that she would lose her only child on that auspicious day. She was a pure devotee of Goddess Sakat. As a protection guard, she gave her son one betel nut and ‘Dub Ka Beeda’. She told her son to chant the name of the lord while he would be put in the kiln. 

As the boy was made to sit in the kiln, her mother started worshipping Goddess Sakat to save the life of her son. The kiln was then lit and left for few days. Due to the magic and grace of the Goddess, the kiln got ripened in a single night. The next morning when the potter came to see the kiln, he was surprised to see it prepared. He was astonished when he saw the lady’ son absolutely fir and fine along with the other children whom he had offered as Bali earlier.

After this magical incident, everybody started believing the existence and power of Goddess Sakat. From that day, mother worship Goddess Sakat along with Lord Ganesha for the healthy and long life of their children. 

Puja Procedure

Generally, Sakat Puja is performed in the evening. Let’s have a look on how to perform the rituals of the day:

• After taking shower in the morning, Chant Ganesha Ashtottara
• In the evening, place an idol of Lord Ganesha on a neat and clean platform
• Decorate it with flowers and Durva grass (Cynodon dactylon)
• Light incense stick (Agarbatti) and lit a lamp (Diya)
• Offer Til Ladoos, banana, coconut and sweet potato to the deity
• Perform Lord Ganesha’s Aarti
• Now, offer worship Moon with Durva grass, Til (sesame) Ladoos, and Arghya (offering mixture of water and milk to Moon). Arghya is offered thrice: for Chaturthi Tithi, for Mahaganapati and for Sankashtanashan Sri Ganeshji.

Sakat Chauth Fast

Person observing strict fast do not eat throughout the day and depend only on water. They break the fast the following morning after worshipping Lord Ganesha. While, partial observers consume Sabudana Khichdi (sago), milk, fruits, nuts and curd. Lord Ganesh is known as Vighnaharta (one who takes away all the troubles of life). Therefore, it is believed that observing this fast brings all the hurdles of life to an end and blesses the observer with Lord’s blessings and grace. Some devotees also visit Lord Ganesha’s temple and recite or listen Sri Mudgalapurana.

Til Ladoos (made from sesame seeds and jaggery) are the specialty of this day which are prepared by the mothers. 5 Ladoos are then offered to Lord Ganesha, 1 to the Moon and 5 are offered to the Brahmins.

I have not made this prediction out of any concern or affection for the party. It is undoubtedly clear that AAP if works other than the traditions, conjunction of Saturn (significator of public) and Rahu (significator of acceleration) is going to give them a very big success. AAP will emerge very strong in the Lok Sabha elections. On the other hand, going on the opposite way and supporting hands with corrupt people will result in downfall or you can say public will reject AAP completely. 

Let’s now talk about the Kundli when Arvind Kejriwal took the oath. While he was taking oath, there was the Navamsa of Pisces ascendant, Libra sign and Virgo. Dual natured ascendant, movable sign and dual natured Navamsa; it seems that there is no chance of stability. 

Here, it is important to talk about ascendant, 4th and 10th house. Due to retrogression of the lord of the ascendant, the party is weak. Mercury, which was affecting Jupiter (lord of the ascendant) and the house of the external support (public support) i.e. fourth house, has now taken off its aspect from the fourth house. Also, 4th house lord has shifted in the 8th house from its present house; hence, government is deviating from its issues and aim. As a result of these transits, it is highly possible for many Congress supporters not to support AAP any more. 3rd house too is the house of support, which (especially) indicates support from close ones. Lord of 3rd house i.e. Venus, after undergoing retrogression has returned back to the 10th house. It means that it has the eighth house from its present house. Therefore, during this time, even the closest supporters may leave AAP alone. Throughout January, Venus is retrograde; so personal conflicts will stay on rise during this time. After this time period, things will start getting settling down. However, some supporters may meet the opponents till February end or March. Good news for AAP during this time is that in the month of March, some reports will strengthen AAP to some extent. Therefore, it means that AAP may have to face the malefic results of Mercury and Venus (which are attracting public toward them), if they held the wrong path and hurt the emotions of public. Here, I would like to repeat the same thing once more that if the party will follow the path of truth, honesty and transparency, Saturn and Rahu will keep on blessing. Also, they may create a big history! On the other hand, the same planets which are responsible behind their success may take back their hand, if they moved on to the path of corruption. Overall, these Lok Sabha elections may give very unexpected results.

Paush Purnima 2014: A Day To Get Rid Of Sins

As per Hindu beliefs, one who takes bath in the holy river on Purnima day is rid of all his/her sins and mistakes. This day is considered as a chance to redeem oneself and find the path for salvation. The places which are famous for Paush Purnima celebration other than Allahabad are Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain to name a few. 

Once the devotees are done with the holy dip, they next perform the Surya Puja (worshipping of Sun God). A small idol of Lord Shiva is made out of mud near the river bank and Puja is performed to the idol and Sun, while chanting Mantras. Once the Puja comes to an end, Prasad (holy food) is distributed among the devotees present there. This day is considered holy for donations. The Paush Purnima which occurs in the month of Magha marks the end of winter, as such some parts of the country also celebrate this day as harvest festival.

To begin with the rituals, the observer takes shower before the sunset. After wearing clean clothes, he/she commences the Puja by worshipping Lord Shiva. To worship Him, His idol or Shivlinga or Nataraja Avatar is needed. Along with the Him, following Gods are also worshipped:

The devotee then applies the sacred ash to his/her forehead and lights a lamp before the Lord. 

Pradosham Fast Observance

Devotees not only pray to Lord on this day but also observes fast to honor Shiva. Strict observers worship Shiva throughout the day and night. They chant Mantras and recite His songs and prayers. Such observers do not consume any eatable and refrain from having water too. On the other hand are partial observers who follow the same rituals but break their fast in the evening after the evening prayers.

Lohri 2014: Celebrating Fertility With Bonfire

In Punjab, the festival of Lohri will be observed on January 13, 2014. Lohri is considered to be the most important and most awaited day. People who belong to Punjabi community are mostly robust, fun-loving and enthusiastic by nature. The festival of Lohri symbolizes their enthusiasm for festive celebrations.

The distinctive and perfectly assorted Indian culture is attracting the inhabitants to get closer to some of the very thrilling and enjoyable festivities. The commencement of these celebrations is to be initiated by the festival of Lohri. It is a festival related to harvesting and is celebrated annually in January. 

Legends And Traditions 

On the day of Lohri, little children demand for Lohri from their elders in the form of money and eatables such as Sesame seeds (Til), Gajak, Jaggery, Rewari and Peanuts, to name a few. The children also sing a festive song in praise of Dulla Bhatti. He is considered as the Punjabi Avatar of Robin Hood. He robbed the riches to assist the poor people. 

Performing Bonfire On Lohri

On the day of Lohri, as the sun sets in the evening, huge bonfires are lit in the harvested fields. A few people also perform this in the front yard of the house. At the time of Lohri celebration, a lot of people gather up at one place. They circle around the rising flames of fire and at this time, they throw edibles like puffed rice, popcorns, etc. While doing so, they say “Adar Aye Dilethar jaye”, by this they mean to pray that “may honor come and may poverty peter out”. 

At the time of celebrating the festival of Lohri, they also sing folk songs. Lohri is a festival in which people offer prayers to Agni (fire) to let their land get blessed with fertility and abundance. After they are done with the rounds around the bonfire (Parikrama), gift exchange ritual with relatives and friends begin. Once the Pooja and other related rituals are done, Prasad (holy food offering) is distributed to all the people present in the celebration. The most important part of this celebration is the Lohri Prasad, which includes sweets like Gajak and Rewri together with some other munchies such as peanuts, popcorns and jaggery. After that, all the guests are served with some traditional edibles like cooked mustard herbs with multi-millet chapattis for dinner.

The Traditional Performance

After getting done with all the related rituals, Bhangra, which is the traditional dance of Punjab, is performed by men. This celebration goes on till late night on the day of Lohri. These traditional touches add up more vigor and excitement to the festive mood.

Maghi: The Day Following Lohri

The day of Maghi falls on the next day of Lohri. This day signifies the commencement of Magh month. In accordance with the beliefs of Hindu religion, Maghi is considered to be the most auspicious day for taking a dip into the holy river together with doing some charity. Sweets such as Kheer (sweet rice porridge dessert) are prepared by adding sugar cane juice, rice and milk as Prasad for the day.

The festival of Lohri comes up with a chance for the people to put aside all their tensions and worries. On this day, people get an opportunity to keep away from their hectic work schedules and to enjoy this festive day to the fullest.
