Raas Leela Celebrations

Raas leela is a divine dance which was performed by Krishna and the gopis, of whom Radha is the closest to him. On the night of Raas leela Krishna invited the gopis to the banks of river Yamuna and danced with them all night long.

Nowadays, Raas leela is performed as a dance drama on the night of Krishna Janmashtami. This is a very grand event, especially in Mathura and Vrindavan, the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

Raas leela dances will have different themes to it, they are :

Fasting On Krishna Janmashtami

Fasting is one important ritual many follow on this day. Devotees keep a 24 hours fast and only break it at midnight, the time of Lord Krishna birth. It is believed that fasting is one medium which will get you closest to Krishna and win you his blessings. There are different types of fasting,

Phalahar Fast and Nirjal Fast. In Phalahar fast, the person can have fruits and milk during the day but refrain from having grains, rice, salt etc. Nirjal fast on the other hand is a very strict fast, in which the person does not even drink water let alone have fruits. So, special dishes made out of milk or Khoya (coagulated milk)are prepared on this day and offered to Lord Krishna. People observing fast will break the fast at midnight after offering prayers to Krishna and by eating the milk sweet. Moving Onto The Youth & Handsome Krishna

Krishna who was famous for his charisma, valour and strength was loved and admired by one and all. He married Rukmini, the princess of Vidarbha and daughter of Bheemshaka. But a more popular and sought after story would be the story of Radha and Krishna. Even though Krishna ended up having wives, the love of Radha and the Gopika's for Krishna is regarded as the most purest.

There are many stories to back this above sentence. Once Narada asked Krishna why he considered Radha's love more pure than his wife Rukmani's. Krishna moved to Hastinapur to live with the Pandavas and Kauravas. When the Pandavas and Kauravas fought for the Kingdom, Krishna was sent as a mediator and failed in bringing peace between the two parties. Eventually a war broke out between the two which lasted for 18 days. Krishna played his part as the Chariot rider to Arjuna. It is then, that Lord Krishna advocates Arjuna about the Nishkam Karma Yoga (selfless action) which is the sacred path to achieve the truth. Lord krishna was born to Vasudeva and Devaki, to put an end to all the evil that has descended upon Mother Earth. Lord Vishnu himself took form in Devaki’s womb and was born as Krishna.

The birthday of Lord Krishna is called as Krishna Janmashtami, and is celebrated with much love by one and all. Krishna’s birth was a threat to King Kamsa’s life, who was the brother of Devaki and the cruel ruler of Mathura. On the day of Vasudeva and Devaki’s wedding, King Kamsa had a dream that, the 8th son of Devaki would be the one responsible for his end on Earth. Then, Kamsa threatened to kill Devaki, but spared her only because of the promise made by Vasudeva, that every child they have would be handed over to him.

So, all the babies that were born to Devaki had been slaughtered by Kamsa and he was awaiting the birth of the 8th baby. On the night before Krishna’s birth, Lord Vishnu appeared in Vasudeva’s dreams and instructed him to take little krishna to Gokula and leave him to be raised as the son of Yashodha. Lord Krishna was born and king Kamsa’s fate was decided, Lord krishna eventually killed King Kamsa and rescued his parents and brought peace to Mathura.

This is just a brief narration about Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna’s legend are many to tell; his many adventures in killing various demons as young Bal Kanhaiya, his tales of love with Gopika’s and Radha, his role in Mahabharatha and many more.

Balaram Jayanti - “Adi Guru’s Birthday”

This year Balaram Jayanti is celebrated on the 26th of August 2013. Balaram Jayanti also known as appearance day is the birthday of Lord Balarama.

One was white which incarnated as Krishna in devaki’s womb, while the other one was black, which was incarnated as Lord Balaram. But in order to save Balaram from being killed by Kansa, he was transferred into the womb of Rohini who was the second wife of Vasudeva, hence the name “Rohini Nandan”.

Balaram is also known as “ Lord of beauty and strength”. It is believed to get the blessings and if one has to please Lord Krishna, he first have to please Lord Balaram and get his blessings. This explains why he is called the “Adi Guru”, which means the first spiritual teacher.

Being Lord Krishna’s elder brother, Lord Balaram assists and helps Krishna in executing all the worldly duties. He is known as the creator of both material and spiritual world. It is believed that the foremost incarnation of Lord Krishna was Sankarsana, who is none other than Lord Balaram. This is just to please and serve Lord Krishna is his transcendental pastimes.

Let’s start with understanding the basic significance of planets in Astrology. The planets are divided into day stars and night stars. Day stars are Saturn, Jupiter and Sun, while night stars are Moon, Mars and Venus. Planet Mercury belongs to both the category.

The planets are further divided into masculine and feminine. While Sun, Jupiter and Mars are masculine, Venus and Moon are feminine. Here also planet Mercury belongs to both the classes.
