Dev Uthani Ekadashi in 2013 is on 13th November 2013. Dev Uthani, also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi, is the day when Lord Vishnu wakes up from His sleep and marks the end of the Chaturmasa. Read on to know more about this blessed period.

Significance Of Dev Uthani Ekadashi


Lord Vishnu, the supreme Lord, the creator of the cosmic world awakens from his four month long sleep on the day of Dev Uthani Ekadashi or Prabodhini Ekadashi. Devothan Ekadashi also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi is on the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha according to the hindu calendar.

Lord Vishnu sleeps on Devshayani Ekadashi and wakes up on Dev Uthani ekadashi. All auspicious events like marriages and such are avoided during this time. Dev Uthani marks the day to begin conducting all the auspicious events.

Fasts, Pujas and rituals are followed with great devotion on the glorious day of Devuthni Ekadashi 2013. It is believed that those who fast on this day will receive the boon of getting rid of the sins committed in the past seven births.

Importance Of Dev Uthani Ekadashi Vrat 


The boons obtained by performing this fast is one that will relieve you from all the worries and pain that has engulfed your life. A person who does Jagran (staying awake throughout the night) will receive the blessings to enter the Vishnu Loka. Performing Prabodhini Ekadashi Vrat will give his ancestors Moksha (salvation) and will reach the doorway to heaven. Observing one Prabodhini Vrat is equal to performing many Ashvamedha Yagyas.

Mantra To Be Chanted 


"ऊँ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय॥" 

“Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaaya||”

Offerings Made On Dev Uthani Ekadashi 


Mangos, bananas, almonds and sweets are offered as donations on this day. On Dwadashi (day after Ekadashi), donations and new cloths are offered to Brahmins.

How To Observe the Fast 


  1. The one who observes Prabodhini fast should have utmost devotion, only then he will be able to witness the results. 
  2. The person should wake up early morning, take bath and go to a temple and chant the above given Mantra 108 times.
  3. Meat, onions, garlic and Masoor Dal (red lentils) should not be consumed on this day. 

What Should Be Avoided On This Day


  1. Getting a haircut is considered inauspicious on this day
  2. Sweeping the house with a broom is avoided, as killing tiny organisms (even subconsciously) is considered a sin. 
  3. Plucking of leaves from trees is also avoided, only fallen leaves can be used for any purposes. 

Dev Uthani Ekadashi is the day Lord Vishnu awakens to set the balance of the Universe and to bless His children with all the boons of a prosperous life.
