Importance of Karva Chauth

The word Karwa Chauth is made up of two words, 'Karwa' i.e. 'earthenware' and 'Chauth' i.e. 'Chaturthi'. Earthenware, i.e Karve, is considered to be of special importance on this festival. All married women wait for this festival throughout the year and fulfill all the rituals with great reverence. The festival of Karva Chauth symbolizes strong relationship, love and trust between the husband and wife.

Offering Arghya To The Moon

When the Moon appears in the sky, all married women who have observed the fast come out to the open area/terrace to perform the ritual. They worship the Moon by lighting the Diya and offering the Arghya through the Karwa. Then, they look at the Moon first through a sieve and then at their husbands’ faces. Then the husbands feed them some sweets or Matthi and water. 

In this way, they open their fast and promise to support their husbands at every turn of life. Along with it, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Kartikeya are also worshiped along with the Moon. It is believed that worshipping them helps to attain the blessings of Goddess Parvati and bring all kinds of happiness in life.

Rules To Follow During Karva Chauth 

• Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati must be venerated before moonrise.
• The woman who is observing the fast must wake up before sunrise, take a bath and eat something which can help them sustain throughout the day.
• The idols of the deities must be kept facing the West, and the person who is performing the rituals must face the East.

It is said that on the night of Sharad Purnima, Lord Krishna created Maha-Raas, a confluence of love and dance in Vrindavan. This is the reason why people in the Braj region hails this Purnima as Ras Purnima. 

As per the astrologers, the Moon rays are said to be beneficial on the day of Sharad Purnima and capable of curing many diseases. On this day, people prepare Kheer or Sweetened Rice Pudding using cow milk and keep it under the moonlight. It is believed that keeping Kheer under the moonlight enhances its medicinal properties.

Fasting is also performed by the devotees on Sharad Purnima. Along with this, people following spiritualism also consider this day important and perform meditation. Hindu natives worship Mata Lakshmi and Moon on Sharad Purnima. Before worshiping Goddess Lakshmi, her image or idol is bathed with Gangajal and then installed on a platform covered by a red cloth. After this, the Goddess is worshiped by burning incense, lamps or diyas and offering flowers.

Sharad Navratri 2019 Today, Know Ghatasthapana Rituals

Worship Maa Shailputri & perform Ghatasthapana on the first day of Navratri! Read puja rituals and mythological importance.

Navratri is a festival of worshipping the Devi Adi Shakti Maa Durga. During the nine days of Navratri, nine different incarnations of Goddess Durga are venerated. The literal meaning of Navratri can be defined with two words, “Nav” + “Ratri”, which means nine nights in English. In this duration, devotees worship the Goddess and seek her blessings for a prosperous life.

Navratri occurs five times in a year, which includes Chaitra, Ashadh, Ashwin or Sharad, Paugh and Magh Navratri. Among these, only Chaitra and Ashwin or Sharad Navratri are said to be of high importance, during which nine forms of Durga, i.e. Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri are revered. On the first day of Navratri, puja and fast are carried out as per the rituals to venerate Maa Shailputri and Ghatasthapana is performed before the puja begins. 

Ghatasthapana Muhurat

In the year 2019, Sharad Navratri is beginning from tomorrow, i.e. 29 September, September, and from that day, Goddess Shakti will be worshipped with great enthusiasm across the country till 8 October, 2019, Tuesday. According to Hindu beliefs, the first day of this holy festival is considered important among the devotees of the Goddess, because Maa Shailputri is worshipped on the same day after performing Ghatasthapana ritual. Importance of Ghatasthapana on the First Day

Ghatasthapana, also known as Kalash Sthapana, in Navratri holds high significance. Since it is the first day of Navratri, Maa Durga is duly worshipped only after performing the Ghatasthapana. Whether it is Chaitra or Sharad Navratri, the Kalash Sthapana ritual is carried out on the Pratipada or Prathama Tithi during an auspicious muhurat. 

According to Hinduism, Lord Ganesha must be worshipped before commencing any auspicious task. As per the holy scriptures, the Kalash (urn) is revered as Lord Ganesha, and considered his equivalent or his symbol. Hence, Lord Ganesha is foremost venerated on the first day of Navratri, and then all the deities are hailed after performing the Ghatasthapana.

The Glory Of Navdurga

Mother Durga is described as 'Durgati Nashini' in Hinduism, i.e. a powerful destroyer of misery and poverty. That is why she is hailed as the Adi Shakti of the entire universe. She was originated by Pitamaha Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Mahadev, the Trinity, to end the evil and offer prosperity and power to her devotees.

Navratri Worshipping Rituals

• Wake up early in the morning, take a bath and decorate the Thali for the puja.
• After cleaning the altar, place an idol or picture of Goddess Durga and her nine incarnations.
• After this, offer red-coloured clothes on the idol of Goddess Durga.
• If you want to fast, then take a resolution in front of the Goddess with true devotion.
• Then, sow the Barley seeds in an earthen pot and pour water in it till the day of Navami. 
• After this, establish the Kalash according to the auspicious muhurat mentioned above in front of the Goddess. Remember to fill the urn with Gangajal, put Mango leaves on its mouth and a coconut on top.
• Now, wrap the urn or Kalash with a red cloth and tie it around using a Kalava or red thread.
• Now, keep the Kalash near the earthen pot.
• After this, carry out the Panchopchar puja of the Goddess with flowers, camphor, incense, diya, and Kalash.
• After this, light an Akhand Jyoti in front of the Goddess. You must know that the devotees of the Goddess light the Akhand Jyoti for these sacred nine days.
• Similarly, chant the Durga Mantras every day for nine days during Navratri, and seek her blessings for a prosperous life.
• After this, on the day of Ashtami or Navami, worship the nine young girls accordingly. Offer them a Dakshina and Bhog comprising of Puri (deep fried bread), Chana or Black Gram and Halwa, a sweet dish.
• On the last day after venerating the Goddess, perform the ritual of Ghat Visarjan. During this, recite the Aarti of Maa Durga, offer her flowers, rice and immerse the Kalash at the end.

Akhand Jyoti During Navratri

Akhand Jyoti lit during Navratri in front of the Goddess holds high importance. It is believed that by lighting this Akhand Jyoti, Goddess Shakti eliminates darkness from the life of her devotees and enlightens their minds and souls. Therefore, by lighting the Akhand Jyoti during Navratri, natives get rid of obstacles, sufferings, troubles and all kinds of diseases. Several sages and renowned historical figures have mentioned in the Vedas that the influence of Akhand Jyoti ablazed during the nine days of Navratri is directly visible on the life of a native.

Importance of Kanya Puja During Navratri

Kanya Pujan, also known as Kumari Pujan, is a special ritual performed on the last day of Navratri. Women have always been given a special place in Hinduism, and bachelor and young girls are hailed as Jagat Janani Maa Jagdamba. Hence, special importance is given to the worshipping rituals carried out for the Goddess in Navratri. During this time, on the day of Ashtami or Navami, devotees invite nine, seven, five, three or one young girl, worship her as one of the incarnations of the Goddess, and offer her Prasad and Dakshina.

Things To Remember During Navratri

• Any native who worships Maa Durga and fasts should observe Brahmacharya for nine days with true devotion.
• The natives who fast for nine days should eat only once throughout the day. During this time, milk, fruits and vegetarian food can be consumed.
• For these nine days, sleeping on the ground garners auspicious results.
• Alcohol or meat is strictly prohibited during these nine days.
• Using or consuming onion or garlic for nine days of Navratri is also prohibited.

Importance of Nine Colours During Navratri

According to Hinduism, during the nine days of Navratri, every day signifies a special color. In such a situation, it is believed that using or wearing these colours during nine days of Navratri garners beneficial results.

• Pratipada: Yellow colour is auspicious.
• Dwitiya: Green colour is auspicious.
• Tritiya: Brown colour is auspicious.
• Chaturthi: Orange colour is auspicious. 
• Panchami: White color is auspicious. 
• Sashti: Red colour is auspicious.
• Saptami: Blue color is auspicious.
• Ashtami: Pink colour is auspicious.
• Navami: Purple colour is auspicious.

Venerating Maa Shailputri On The First Day Of Navratri

As we have told you above, nine different forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped during Navratri. Maa Shailputri is venerated on the first day of Navratri. In Sanskrit, “Shailputri” means "daughter of the mountain", and accordingly, she got this name due to being the daughter of the Mountain King Himalaya. According to mythological beliefs, their mount is a Bull, due to which she is also known as Vrisharudha. This form of the Goddess holds a Trishul or Trident in her right hand and Lotus flower in her left hand. This rare form of the Goddess is also known as Sati in many states.

Depiction of Maa Shailputri

This form of Maa Durga embellishes the Trident or Trishul in the right hand and the Lotus flower in the left hand. Mother Shailputri adorns a half-moon on her forehead and rides the Nandi bull.

Sarv Pitri Amavasya Importance 

As per Hindu religious beliefs, it is stated that the Shradh done on the day of Ashwin Amavasya provides salvation to the departed souls of one’s ancestors. They move out from the web of birth and death. On this day, the Shradh of those family members are commenced, who died untimely and not of natural causes. This Amavsya also has Tantric eminence as its very next day marks the arrival of Sharad Navratri. Therefore, those who wish to attain Tantric accomplishments perform Tantric practices on Amavasya night.

In the present time, people lack time and many things are forgotten due to remaining busy. Therefore, if you do not remember the Shradh date of your ancestors for any reason, then it can be performed on this day. You can perform the Tarpan of your forefathers or ancestors in case you failed to do so throughout the Shradh. 

Tasks To Be Performed During Pitra Visarjan Amavasya 

• Take a bath on a river, waterfall or a furrow on this day. 
• Offer Arghya to the Sun in the morning. 
• Afterwards, perform the Tarpan for your forefathers. 
• Light a lamp at dusk and place puri and other sweets at the door. This should be done so that the fathers do not leave hungry and the path for their return becomes visible in the light of the lamp.
• Pind Daan Rituals to Follow During Pitru Paksha Amavasya

Keep your mind stable during the time of Pind Daan. 

• Chant the Gayatri Mantra.
• Also recite the Somay Pitrimate Swaha Mantra.
• The Shastras give prominence to three Pind offerings. 
• Firstly, offer the Pind Daan to water. 
• Give the second Pind Daan to a Gurus' wife.
• Lastly, offer the last Pind Daan to the fire.

According to the mythology, it is believed that the most important ray of the Sun is a ray named Ama and with the help of its radiance, the Sun God brightens up all the three worlds. Anant Chaturdashi, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu will be celebrated on 2 September 2019. The first is Anant, which signifies an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, which has no beginning or end. It can be said that it is the infinitive form of Vishnu Ji. On this very auspicious occasion, Lord Narayan is venerated in a special manner. After the Puja rituals are completed, there is a tradition of tying the Anant Sutra, which has great significance. This Anant Sutra is made of cotton or silk thread and tied around one’s wrist after commencing the Puja Vidhi. It is often believed that after wearing the Anant Sutra, God becomes our guiding light, saves us from difficulties and provides us with the worldly pleasures and comforts. Anant Chaturdashi Fast Rituals 

The fast of Ananta Chaturdashi is kept on Shukla Paksha’s Chaturdashi Tithi during the month of Bhadrapada , for which Chaturdashi Tithi should be available in two Muhurats after sunrise. If the Tithi ends before two Muhurats after sunrise, then Anant Chaturdashi should be celebrated on the next day. Worshiping during this fast and performing its primary rituals during the first half of the day is considered auspicious. Under any circumstances, if the puja is not done during the days’ first half, then it should be commemorated in the initial phase of midday, which consists of the seventh and the ninth Muhurat of the day.

Anant Chaturdashi’s Importance

As per the religious beliefs, the occasion of Anant Chaturdashi and its fast has been observed since the era of the Mahabharata. When the Pandavs lost their everything to Kauravas and spending time in exile in the forest, Lord Krishna notified them about the importance of Anant Chaturdashi fast. It is said that Lord Vishnu appeared in fourteen incarnations at the beginning of this Universe’s creation to protect and uphold all the fourteen worlds, because of which he seemed infinite to everyone.

Thus, the Anant Chaturdashi fast is kept to appease Lord Narayan and obtain the fruits of success and prosperity. The Anant or infinite representation of Vishnu ji is venerated during this festival. All the rituals associated with this event are commenced during the afternoon hours. On this day, after taking a bath in the morning, an oath is taken by the devotees to observe this fast and then they establish the Kalash or Vase. The importance of fast and also this festival is significantly described in the Agni Purana.

Ganesh Visarjan

On 12 September 2019, Ganesh Visarjan will also be celebrated. On this day, the idol of Lord Ganesha is immersed in the water. This festival is remarked by specifically decorating the statue of Vighnaharta Ganesh Ji and then venerating it. On this day, numerous processions are taken through the streets, to immerse large idols of Lord Ganesha in water.to immerse large idols of Lord Ganesha(Visarjan) in water. Ganeshotsav is celebrated with great pomp in the state of Maharashtra.

Ganesh Visarjan in Mythology 

The observation of Ganesh Visarjan finds a special place in Hindu religious texts. It is believed that Lord Ganesha wrote the Mahabharata text, while Maharishi Ved Vyas Ji narrated the entire story of this epic to Ganesha for ten consecutive days without stopping for a single minute. After its completion, when Ved Vyas ji touched the Lord, he found that his body temperature has increased. Witnessing his deteriorated health condition, Maharishi Ved Vyas took him to a nearby waterfall and neutralized his body temperature. Popular beliefs state that through the medium of Visrajan, Lord Ganesha is pacified and venerated.

• Before the Visarajan, venerate the Lord by observing the necessary riruals. 
• Offer Modak and other sweets of him during the Puja 
• Also, perform the Aarti of Lord Ganesha. 
• Bid farewell to the Lord and seek his blessings. 
• Respectfully withdraw the statue of the Lord from the Puja place. 
• Place a pink cloth on the palate.
• Place the statue gently on a wooden board.
• Before placing the idol, purify the wooden slab with Gangajal. 
• Along with the idol of Ganesh Ji, place fruits, flowers, clothes and Modak in the slab.

Things to Keep in Mind during Ganesh Puja 

• While offering reverence to Lord Ganesha, one should not use Tulsi or basil leaves.

Mythological Significance of Onam 

As per popular beliefs , it is stated that a demon king named Mahabali used to rule Kerala during the ancient times. Under his reign, the local natives enjoyed a peaceful time and encountered little or no difficulties. However, the king of all the Devtas, Lord Indra became jealous of his rising popularity and as he apprehended that Mahabalis’ grand status would overshadow his power and authority. Consequently, he manipulated all the Devas to approach Lord Vishnu and ask him to end his reign. Vishnu ji, who was quite aware of Mahabali’s generous nature, took the form of a Vamana(a dwarf Brahmin) and pleaded with him to donate three footsteps of land. Afterwards, Vishnu ji, disguised as the Vamana, enclosed the entire earth in his first step and then went on to cover the whole of heaven in his second step. When he was seeking for a spot to put forth his last and third step, King Mahabali presented his head for Lord Vamana to put his foot on, and Lord Vamana pushed him to purgatory. But King Mahabali's benevolence created a deep imprint in Vishnu Ji’s heart which is why he gave him the boon of being able to visit his subjects and kingdom once in a year. Thus, the festival of Onam is celebrated in Mahabali’s honour and to mark his homecoming.

Onam: Associated Rituals

Many rituals find place in the festivities of Onam. There are also various rites which are strictly and religiously followed by the natives of Kerala. Some of them are mentioned below. 

• Wake up early in the morning and begin your day by cleaning the house. 
• Select a place in the front yard of the house and smear it with cow dung. 
• Afterwards, prepare conical figures made out of sticky clay. Paint them red and place it on the cleaned space. 
• A senior family member of the house should wake up early in the morning. The concerned person should perform all the rituals and also act as the priest. 
• He/she should also prepare the Ata( made from rice flour and molasses) to make the Naivedyam(offering to God) 
• Light lamps in front of all the Gods and joyously take part in the celebrations along with your family members. 
• The tradition of Arappu Vilakkukal should also be followed where the male members of the household make loud noises in a joyous and rhythmic manner which marks the beginning of Onam celebrations. 
• Each and every family member should dress up and pay a visit to the local temple 
• Afterwards, offer Onapudava (tradition of gifting clothes) to family members and servants. 

Apart from the ones mentioned above, there are some significant occurrences during Onam, which are definitely carried out in a traditional Malayalam family. They are noted down below 

Onasadya: The Grand Feast 

After the completion of the morning rituals, the family members get ready to take part in the grand feast which is also known as Onasadya. The most prominent and biggest area of the household is selected to have the meal. Mats are laid down on the ground so that one can enjoy the traditional Malayalam grandeur while eating. During this feast, the eldest member of the family sits at the centre and a brass lamp is placed in front of him at a distance. A small plantain leaf is used to serve the food which is kept on the left side of the lamp. It is considered to be an offering made to Lord Ganpati. After the offering is made to Ganapati, the food is distributed among everyone. The extensively rich meal prepared on this day consists of only vegetarian dishes and served on a banana leaf. 

Vallamkali: The Boat Race 

Vallamkali or the Snake Boat Race, is the most anticipated event of Onam. Just a few days before Thiruvonam, this race takes place at at Alappuzha. Quite a significant number of decorated large boats, also known as Chundan Vallams participate are seen in this race. The boats are rowed by the participants according to the beats of drums and rhythm of songs.

Recreational Activities

During the festival of Onam, natives also take part in various recreational activities. Those who take a keen interest in sports, are exceptionally seen getting involved in such activities. Some traditional games are played during this festival, which are collectively known as Onakalikal which include ball archery, Kutukutu (Kabaddi), games and combats. Meanwhile, dances like Kaikottikali and Thumbi Thullal are performed by girls and woman. A Clap dance called Kaikotti kali is performed by women in their ethnic gold bordered mundu and neriyathu is a wonderful sight to spectate. Additionally, there is also a tradition of taking rides in a swing which is hung high in a tree. Onappaattu or the songs of Onam are also played during this festive season.

Mahalakshmi Vrat: Puja Rituals To Follow

• After waking up on the day of fast, meditate peacefully while remembering the name of Maa Laxmi. After this, take a bath and clean the temple altar.
• After this, take a vow to observe the fast and pray to the Goddess for successful completion of this fast without any disruption.
• If you are observing the fast for 16 or even three days, then you must worship the Goddess in the morning as well as evening as well.
• Thoroughly clean your house for these 16 days.
• After the completion of the fast on the sixteenth day, prepare a Mandap or Pavillion with a red cloth and place the idol of Maa Laxmi in it.
• Keep fruits, flowers, sweets, nuts, kumkum etc. at the place of worship.
• Offer yarn during the worship sixteen times to the Goddess, and chant the mantra given below while doing it. The meaning of this mantra is, “O Mother Lakshmi, I hope that you are satisfied with this fast observed by me.”

क्षीरोदार्णवसम्भूता लक्ष्मीश्चन्द्र सहोदरा। 

व्रतोनानेत सन्तुष्टा भवताद्विष्णुबल्लभा।।

kṣīrodārṇavasambhūtā lakṣmīścandra sahodarā।

• After this, bathe the idol of Mata Lakshmi with Panchamrit and perform the Shodashopachar puja ritual. If you are capable, then you can invite four Brahmins on this day and feed them. 
• On the day of Mahalakshmi Vrat, do not consume any food items other than fruits, milk and sweets.

Ione can find a mythological legend associated with the Mahalaxmi Vrat in the Puranas. According to this legend, there lived a poor Brahmin in a village who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Once pleased with his devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared in front of him and offered him a boon. The Brahmin wished for Maa Goddess to reside at his place. After listening to to the Brahmin, Lord Vishnu told him about a woman who prepares the cow dung or Gobar at the temple near his village, who is the incarnation of Maa Laxmi. He asked him to invite her at home. 

The Brahmin followed the idea given by Lord Vishnu, and invited her to his place. Hearing his words, Goddess Lakshmi understood that this ides belong to Lord Vishnu. With this, she advised the Brahmin to observe the Mahalaxmi fast for 16 days, and offer Arghya to the Moon at midnight on the 16th day. The Brahmin followed her advice, observed Mahalakshmi fast, and on the 16th day, Maa Laxmi kept her promise. Since then, Mahalakshmi Vrat is observed by the people of India.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the first Vice President and second President of our country India, was born on 5 September 1888. Even before the independence of India, he was conferred the title of "Sir" by the British Empire due to his supreme intellect and knowledge. When he took oath as President of our country in 1962, his students wanted to celebrate his birthday as Radhakrishnan Day to honor him but Dr. Krishnan refused to do so and said that the celebration of his birthday as Teacher’s Day and offering tribute to the teachers would overwhelm him. Since then till today, the trend to celebrate Teachers' Day on 5 September, has been followed. As we have told you that the fast of Skanda Sashti is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, the son of Shiva-Parvati, which is celebrated for six days. In the year 2019, this festival begins on Wednesday, 4 September. In North India, Lord Kartikeya is called the son of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati, whereas in South India, natives worship Lord Murugan as their son. Especially in the provincial states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala etc. in South India, there is a provision to worship Lord Kartikeya, which is also known as Skanda Shashti Puja.

The festival of Skanda Sashti celebrates the birth of Lord Murugan and destruction of the Asuras. Skanda Sashti & Its Religious Significance

Skanda Purana is a sacred scripture like all other eighteen Puranas. According to Skanda Purana, in the mythological time, Tarakasura, Surpadma, and Simhamukha defeated the Devtas with their divine powers and chased them away from Heaven to Earth. By conquering the Heaven, those demons started terrorizing the Earth by torturing the Devtas and humans. 

Of the three demons Tarakasura, Surapadma, Simhamukha, Esurpadma had attained a boon from Lord Mahadeva that no god or man could kill him except the son of Lord Shiva. The terror of the Demons was increasing day by day. On the other hand, Lord Shiva was extremely upset due to Goddess Sati getting engulfed in fire, and as a result, immersed in severe austerity. The demons took full advantage of this situation, as they were aware of the fact that none other than Lord Shiva can stop their deeds.

Troubled by the increasing terror, all the Gods and Goddesses went to Lord Brahma for his help. At their request, Lord Brahma requested Lord Kama Dev to awaken Lord Shiva from his tenacity. However, everyone knew very well that it is not an easy task to wake up Mahadev. There were a lot of risks, as it was difficult for anyone to escape the wrath of Lord Shiva. But to control the worsening situation, Lord Kama decided to go ahead and attained success in his efforts. However, due to the disturbance caused in his tenacity, Lord Shiva's Third Eye got opened wide due to his anger, which consumed Lord Kamdev with its fierce fire.

It is believed that at that time, Lord Shiva's body was dismembered into six parts, which fell into the Ganges River. Then, Goddess Ganga kept those six fractions of Lord Shiva in the jungle. Many years later, Goddess Parvati created six sons of Lord Mahadev, one of them being Lord Murugan.

The Skanda Purana depicts Lord Murugan in many forms. According to it:-

• Lord Murugan has one face, and two hands.
• According to the second form, he has four hands and one face.
• According to the third form, he has six faces and twelve hands.

When Goddess Parvati was creating Lord Murugan, the terror of Demons was increasing day by day. Adding to it, they had held several Devtas and Devis captive. Observing this, Lord Murugan decided to put an end to all of it, and challenged the Demons for a battle, which lasted for days. On the last day, Lord Murugan finally killed the demon Surpadma and saved the world and Gods.

The day the Asuras were terminated was the day of Skanda Sashti, which established the fact about the Good triumphing over Evil. Since then, it is believed that the people of South India celebrate this festival with great reverence every year to celebrate this victory.

Things To Remember During Skanda Sashti

Do not consume meat or alcohol during these six days.

During this time, many people avoid using onion, garlic etc.

Those who fast on Skanda Sashti must recite Lord Murugan, Kanta Shashthi Kavasam and Subramanya Bhujangam Path.

During this time, visit the Lord Murugan's temple in the morning and worship him.

Throughout the fast, nothing should be eaten. However, if this is not possible, then you can have one meal or fruit diet throughout the day.

Fasting for all six days of Skanda Sashti is considered to be auspicious.

Several natives who are fasting drink coconut water for six days.

During this time, the native should avoid lying, fighting and quarreling.
