Dev Uthani Ekadashi : Associated Mythological Legends

Once upon a time Goddess Lakshmi asked Lord Narayan, “Oh Lord! If you keep waking up throughout the day and night, without taking rest for a single second, then your irregular sleeping pattern will prove to be harmful. Therefore, you should book a period in a year’s time, to give yourself some rest and relaxation. This will also help me to spend some moments of leisure.”

Lord Vishnu listened carefully to his consort, Goddess Lakshmi and replied with a smile. He said, “Goddess! All deities especially you, suffer because of me. You don't even get a minute’s rest due to all these hassle. Hence, abiding by your words, from today onwards, I will sleep continuously for four months during the rainy season. During this time, all the Gods and Goddesses including you will get ample time to spend some leisurely moments.

This sleep of mine will be called the Alpanidra (sleep apnea) and Pralay Kaleen Mahanidra. This will prove to be the ultimate blessing for my devotees. In this period, all my devotees will serve me and celebrate those days on which I go to sleep and wake up. And on these days only, I will reside in their households along with you.”
