Vat Savitri Purnima Vrat Auspicious Muhurat & Worshipping Rituals

Every Purnima that comes in a month holds high significance in Hinduism, but the one that comes during the month of Jyeshtha is believed to be sacred and holy. According to religious beliefs, bathing and donating on this day seems to be very important. It is said that if a devotee conducts the Ganga Snan or bathing in the Ganges, carry out the Puja and then make donations, then his/her desires and wishes get fulfilled. In several states, Jyeshtha Poornima is also known as Vat Poornima Vrat and celebrated with fervour, whose significance and puja rituals are similar to that of Vat Savitri Vrat. According to the Skanda Purana and Bhavishyottara Purana, Vat Savitri Vrat must be observed during the month of Jyeshtha. This is the reason why women in Gujarat, Maharashtra and several states of South India observe the Vat Savitri Vrat on Jyeshtha Purnima. On the other hand, this fast is observed on the day of Jyeshtha Amavasya in the regions of Northern India.

Muhurat for Vat Purnima Vrat & It’s Importance

This year, the auspicious Poornima during the Jyeshtha month is falling on 16 June, 2019. As per astrology experts, if the date(tithi) of Purnima begins before midday or after sunset on Chaturdashi, then the fast must be kept on the previous day. This means that the fast should be observed on the Chaturdashi Viddha Poornima. Jyeshtha Poornima is not only significant for bathing and donating but also for venerating the Lord Shiva. Actually, this day marks the beginning of collecting the Ganga water in order to visit Amarnath and bathe Lord Shiva with it.

Jyeshtha Poornima or Vat Purnima Vrat Puja Rituals

As told above, Jyeshtha Poornima is also celebrated as Vat Purnima Vrat, which is why the same rituals for Vat Savitri Vrat can be followed while observing the Vat Purnima fast. On this day, the Banyan tree is worshipped with great honour and devotion.

• On this day, women must wake up early, bathe and wear new clothes.
• During the evening of Vat Savitri Puja, married women who are fasting must sit under the Banyan tree and worship Savitri Devi with a devoted heart.
• Women must keep all the puja ingredients in a basket, stand under the tree and offer it water.
• After this, Prasad must be offered to it and incense stick must also be lit.
• During this time, fan the Vat tree using a hand fan made of bamboo and seek the blessings of Goddess Savitri by worshipping her.
• After this step, married women must wish for longevity and good health of their husbands while circumambulating around the tree seven times and tying the sacred thread or moli around it.
• In the end, listen to the story of Savitri-Satyawan. 
• After this, use the same hand fan for your husband and seek his blessings.
• Then, consume the fruits offered as prasad and break your fast in the evening by eating something sweet.

Vat Savitri Purnima Vrat Puja Items

As per the Shastras, it is believed that just like Vat Purnima Vrat and Puja must be observed during the auspicious muhurat, right puja items and ingredients must also be used to receive favourable outcomes. For conducting the Vat Savitri Poornima puja, the items to be used are:

• Idols of Satyavan-Savitri made of a cloth
• A fan made of bamboo
• A Red thread of yarn
• Incense stick
• A clay lamp
• Ghee or Clarified Butter
• Flowers and fruits
• 1.25 meters of cloth
• 2 vessels filled with water and mixed with vermilion
• Roli or Sacred red thread

Importance of Banyan Tree on Vat Savitri Poornima

As per the scriptures, the word “Vat” and “Savitri” in Vat Savitri Vrat holds special significance. Just like the Peepal tree, the Vat or Banyan tree is also considered significant from the ancient times. As per religious scholars, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh reside within this tree. This is why worshipping the Banyan tree by sitting beneath it and listening to the Vrat Katha fulfills one’s desires. The Vat Tree is widely known for its trait of longevity, because this tree goes on to live for a very long time. On this day, married women worship this tree and pray for the longevity of their husbands from the Trimurti residing within the Banyan tree.

Vat Savitri Vrat Katha

As per mythological beliefs, Lady Savitri is seen as a devoted wife in the Indian culture. The name Savitri is also associated with Goddess Saraswati and Ved Mata Gayatri. Savitri was born under specific circumstances. In this subject itself, it is said that King Ashwapati had no offspring, and in order to fulfil his wish, he made one lakh offerings while chanting mantras. After doing this for eighteen years straight, Maa Savitri was pleased and she gave him the boon of a bright daughter. Eventually a daughter was born in his family, and he named him Savitri. 

Savitri, the king’s daughter, was stunningly beautiful, which made the task of finding a deserving groom for her rather difficult. This became a reason of concern for the King. Seeing her father stressed regarding her marriage, she herself went out to search for the best match around the Tapovan. There, she saw Satyavan, the son of King Dyumatsena, and chose him as her ideal husband. Satyavan had the yoga of early death in his kundli and was a Veda Scholar. During the marriage, Narad Muni warned Savitri about the short lifespan of Satyavan, but she overheard everything and went ahead with the ceremony. 

When his time of death approached, Savitri carried out great penance and fought with Lord Yamraj for her husband’s life. After seeing her dedication and loyalty, Lord Yamraj got pleased and asked her for a boon. Hence, Savitri wished for the longevity of her husband and saved her husband’s life.
