Thyroid: Astrological Reasons

Author: Astrologer Usha Saxena

Thyroid is one of the most common diseases of present time. A thyroid patient sees problem in all aspect of his life. Thyroid increases the risk of obesity and heart diseases, depression, anxiety, hair loss, and certain sexual problems. If undiagnosed, it affects patient's life severely and that too without patient even realizing that the Thyroid is actually the root cause of many problems in his life.

What is the thyroid and what does it do? Generally people see Thyroid as a problem related to neck & throat part of human body. Astrologically this part of body relates to 3rd house, but we may not get complete picture if we restrict our analysis to 3rd house only. A detailed analysis require good understanding of the disease. How this disease effects the body and which planets and houses are responsible for this disease? Here is a "quick & rough guide" to the thyroid.

The Thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck just below the Adams apple. The thyroid gland works like a tiny factory that uses iodine (mostly from the diet in foods such as seafood and salt) to produce thyroid hormones. These hormones help to regulate body's metabolism and effects processes, such as growth and other important functions of the body.

Here is how medicinenet.com explains this process -

"The thyroid itself is regulated by another gland located in the brain, called the pituitary. In turn, the pituitary is regulated in part by the thyroid (via a "feedback" effect of thyroid hormone on the pituitary gland) and by another gland called the hypothalamus.

The hypothalamus releases a hormone called thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), which sends a signal to the pituitary to release thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). In turn, TSH sends a signal to the thyroid to release thyroid hormones. If over-activity of any of these three glands occurs, an excessive amount of thyroid hormones can be produced, thereby resulting in hyperthyroidism. Similarly, if under-activity of any of these glands occurs, a deficiency of thyroid hormones can result, causing hypothyroidism."

Basically term Thyroid is a disorder of 3 glands -
1. A butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck.
2. Pituitary gland located in the brain.
3. Hypothalamus gland.

Which planet or planets should take in consideration for abnormality of these glands?
The thyroid gland works like a tiny factory that uses iodine (mostly from the diet in foods such as seafood and salt) to produce thyroid hormones. These hormones help to regulate the body's metabolism and effects processes, such as growth and other important functions of the body.  When it is associated with metabolism, how can we forget Jupiter? Jupiter is associated with the body's largest and probably most complex organ, the liver. This organ produces bile, aiding the digestion of fats and plays an important role in the metabolism. So pituitary gland is also connected with Jupiter.

Here are my findings based on my analysis of many birth charts of people having thyroid -
1. 3rd lord, Gemini sign (Gemini sign in Lagna, in 3rd, in 6th, or in 8th house).
2. Mercury, in Western astrology Mercury is associated with the thyroid gland and the lungs.
3. Jupiter should be 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th  lord or placed in these houses or in 5thhouse.

Native gave the description of his problems that he has thyroid and real bad insulin resistance and weak digestion, obesity and always cough. This is a typical thyroid case. Let us have a look at the birth chart.

In the above lines 3rd lord, Gemini sign, Mercury, Jupiter is considered for these problems. In this chart 3rd lord is in 8th house, Ketu is in Gemini sign, Mercury is retrograde, Jupiter as 12 lord is in 5th house and Moon is ill placed. This all indicates cough and bad insulin resistance and weak digestion.
