Aja Ekadashi Vrat - Ancient Mythology

According to Brahma Vaivarta Purana, King Harishchandra, who is popular for always standing by truth, lost his kingdom and powers due to the sins committed by him in previous birth. Due to the adverse circumstances, he had to sell his wife and had to work on the cremation yard. During this unfortunate phase, he met Sage Gautam. He asked the reason of his bad condition and also for its solution. Sage Gautam advised him to observe Aja Ekadashi Vrat and worship Lord Vishnu to get rid of all his sins and to get back all the wealth and prosperity.

King Harishchandra observed the fast on the Ekadashi tithi of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada month (Aja Ekadashi), as suggested by the Sage Gautam. He performed vigilance (Jagran) throughout the night and worshiped Lord Vishnu to get rid of his sins.

It is said that by observing this Vrat, King Harishchandra’s got relief from his sins and he also got back his wife and son. Also, he got back his lost kingdom, name, and fame. He lived a very happy life thereafter and achieved salvation (Moksha) after death.
