Guru Purnima is celebrated as the birthday of Guru Vyasa. According to the Hindu calendar, every year, this glorious festival, which is also known as Vyasa Purnima, is celebrated on the Purnima (full Moon day) of the Hindu month, Ashadha. In India, a Guru is considered as the manifestation of God. Hence, on the day of Guru Purnima, people worship their mentor (Guru). Guru Vyasa is known as the Guru of all. Guru Purnima holds a special place for Hindus, as it is celebrated in the memory of the greatest saint of all times named Ved Vyasa who was born on this day. Vyasa edited the four Vedas, wrote 18 Puranas, the epic ‘Mahabharata’, and the most sacred ‘Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta’.

Additionally, Guru Purnima is also celebrated by Buddhists with equal enthusiasm. Followers of Buddhism believe that Lord Buddha gave his first sermon on the day of Guru Purnima. Hence, the Buddhism established from this holy day.

Guru Tattva (the principles that define a spiritual teacher) is honored on this special day of Guru Purnima. Therefore, devotees offer prayers showing their gratitude toward their Guru.

On this day, devotees perform Puja, Yagnas, offer prayers, chant Mantras, along with the rituals to show their respect for their spiritual master or Guru. Disciples organize cultural programs, sing devotional songs or Bhajans showing their faith and love towards the master. It is believed that whatever we wish for, is fulfilled by the Guru during our prayers.

According to the Hindu mythology, it is believed that a human life is incomplete and is a complex mystery, for which it is necessary that an individual has someone who has an expertise on the subject called ‘Life’. Hence, this day is marked as the thanksgiving ceremony to Guru.

The period of Chaturmas meaning ‘four months’ starts from this particular day. During this time in the ancient era, the wandering spiritual Gurus with their followers used to settle at one place and study the Brahma Sutras written by Guru Vyasa. Therefore, the seekers on Guru Purnima do meditation to attain the supreme knowledge.

Meaning: Guru is the creator ‘Brahma’, Guru is the preserver ‘Vishnu’, Guru is also the destroyer ‘Shiva’ and he is the supreme power. I offer my salutations to the Guru.
