Sawan and Lord Shiva

A specific day, week or month is dedicated to every God and Goddess in Sanatan Dharm. All the 30 days of the Sawan month are devoted to Lord Shiva who is the God of all gods. According to Mahabharata, Lord Shiva drunk the entire poison to save the universe.

What is the Significance?

It is said that Shiva became restless as his temperature rose considerably due to the effect of poison in the body. Every God tried to bring down Shiva’s body temperature to the normal but nothing seemed to help. At last, he held an elixir like Moon on his forehead which provided Lord Shiva the required coolness.

Since, Shiva’s body temperature rose to a considerably high level when he drank the entire poison for protecting every creature of the earth. So, today also, in order to show our gratitude and thankfulness, we offer the things which have a cooling effect.

If we look at the another aspect, the destroyer form of Lord Shiva’s is called Rudra, Rudra means fire. Human beings are affected by different kinds of fire like diseases, enemies, financial problems and mental stress. These kinds of sufferings have been effecting an individual since ages. All kinds of sufferings are like Rudra (fire) only. According to Shiva Purana, Shiva in the form of Brahma, is the creator of the earth, in the form of Vishnu he is the protector and as Rudra, he is the destroyer. In order to calm down this fire like Rudra, we perform Rudra Abhishek i.e. bathing the Shivling by our offerings.

What Are The Benefits?

भावहिं मेटि सकहि त्रिपुरारी! The meaning of this Sanskrit verse is that if there is anyone who has the capability to change the destiny, it is only Shiva. The ultimate remedy of reducing the harmful impact of any planet is offering prayers to Lord Shiva. The sufferings which an individual goes through all his life is because of the evil effects of any planet. The planets which produce the most harmful effects are Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. If the birth chart indicates the zone for sufferings and difficulties, it is because of the influence of these planets only. The removal of sufferings and obstacles like Shani Sade Sati, Dhaiya, Kaal Sarp, Kepadrum Yog, Vishkumbh Yog, Balarishta Yog, Markesh Yog can be made by worshiping Shiva only. If you want to get rid of the worldly pains, it is possible only by praying to Shiva.

How to offer prayers?

Lord Shiva is also known as Bholenath. Bhole means innocence. Neither any special Puja item nor any particular Puja procedure is required to worship Lord Shiva. The rituals can be performed without any expense and with utmost ease. Shankaracharya had also explained the procedure for Manas Puja. In this procedure you have to offer everything from the heart. The things like flowers, Chandan, Dhoop, Deep etc are said to be offered by just believing and not doing that in actual.

The Things loved by Lord Shiva

  1. Ganga Jal is very dear to Lord Shiva as during the rise of heat in Shiva’s body, he held Ganga Jal and Moon. That means honouring Shiva with Ganga Jal is the ultimate.
  2. Lord Shiva is fond of bael leaves as well. It is said that:
त्रिदलं त्रिगुणाकारं त्रिनेत्रम च त्रियायुधम्, त्रिजन्म पाप संहारम एकबिल्वम शिवार्पणम।

These two things are very dear to Bholenath. An individual can offer just these two things while praying. You can chant the Mantra “Om Namah Shivaye” while offering Ganga Jal to Shivling. Other than this, you can also mix Ganga Jal with ingredients like cow’s milk, honey, pure Cow’s Ghee, white sandalwood and bael leaves. The bael leaves must be fresh and soft.

Auspicious Day: Generally, there is no specific day meant for offering prayers to Shiva in the month of Sawan. But, it is said that Shiva is close to the Moon and hence the day related to Moon that is Monday, is considered the most suitable.

Muhurat (auspicious time): A specific time is not required for offering prayers to Lord Shiva but for performing special rituals such as Rudra Abhishek, Rudra Path and Maha Mrityunjaya, you need to decide a particular time and day of the month. However, you can conduct these rituals anytime in the month of Sawan.

Mantra: You can chant the Mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” to please Shiva. Other than this, it will be very good if you can also chant Rudra Gayatri.

"ॐ तद्पुरुषाय विदमहे , महादेवाय धीमहि , तन्नो रुद्रः प्रचोदयात।"

Along with that you can also recite " ॐ नागेन्द्रहाराय त्रिलोचनाय …… " or Rudra Ashtkam by Tulsi Das " नमामि शमीशान निर्वाण रूपं , विभु व्यापकं ब्रह्मवेद स्वरूपं.......... " which is also very fruitful.

Note: For the devotees or the one who are suffering from any difficulty, it is essential to worship Lord Shiva with complete devotion as it removes the pain. I have suggested an easy and less time consuming routine for performing rituals for a common man who has a family and business. Your complete faith is enough for worshiping Shiva. The procedure to offer prayers which is mentioned above can be followed by your own. However, a Pandit or expert is required for performing Rudra abhishek, Rudra Path, Maha Mrityunjaya etc.
