Panchak, a time duration considered to be inauspicious to begin certain important work, new venture and things like that. Panchak for the month of September begins on 17th of September and ends on 21st of September. The main concept of Panchak is the effects Moon has on the zodiac signs Aquarius and Pisces. As such the constellations associated with this, i.e Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Purva Bhadrapada and Revati. It takes approximately 5 days for Moon to transit through these five constellations and as such these five days are deemed inauspicious to do certain important work. Uttara Bhadrapada is considered to be endless, as such long term activities are considered suitable to start during this period. Purva bhadrapada considered to be heated, hence activities involving heated discussions and such, like court cases etc are undertaken during this period.

All the devas turned to Lord Shiva for help, so Lord Shiva on hearing the cries of the devas and mankind, collected the poison in a pot and drank the poison called halahal. Goddess Parvati made the poison freeze in his throat thus making his throat blue in color. This incident got Lord Shiva the name Neelakanta. This gesture of Lord shiva saved the universe from destruction. 

As such every month Pradosh Vrat is observed to please Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and get their blessings to lead a life filled with happiness and contentment.
