Significance of Makar Sankranti
On the day of Makar Sankranti, Sun transits to Capricorn (Makar). Sun signifies knowledge, spiritual light, and wisdom. It is tranditionally celebrated as a harvest festival. Pongal
Pongal is celebrated with great enthusiasm Tamilians all over the world. As per Tamil Calendar, January 15, 2016 is the day when this festival will be celebrated. Tamilians say 'Thai Pirandhaal Vazhi Pirakkum’, which means that all evil thoughts and problems will be solved after this day. For farmers, this festival of Pongal is like a new beginning of fortunate life.
Magh Bihu
Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is on January 15, 2016. During this festival, a lavish feast is organised by people when they greet each other and exchange Bihu wishes. Prayer is offered to the God of fire, which marks the end of the harvesting year.
