Karma is the one thing many fear about and if there is a chance to set it right, then why wouldn’t anybody do it. Pradosh Vrat is one such devine chance to ask the Lord to burn the sins and give a bright future ahead.

Pradosh Vrat is a fast observed to get the blessings of the supreme Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Pradosh fast is observed during the sandhyakal of both Shukla and Krishna Paksha of the Lunar calendar.

Significance Of Pradosh Vrat

Pradosh also spelled as Pradosham or Pradosha is observed as a way to get rid of all the sins committed in the past life and obtain moksha in the present life (Kalyug). This vrat will rid you from all the bad vibes clogging your mind and give you a clear spiritual awakening.

There are different types of Pradosh Vrats, but the most important ones are Shani Pradosham, Soma Pradosham and Maha Pradosham.

Shani Pradosham is one which falls on Saturdays, Soma Pradosham is one which falls on Mondays and Maha Pradosham is one which falls on the day before Maha Shivrathri. If the Pardosham falls on a Tuesday then it is called Bhauma Pradosham.

It is believed that this is the time when all the Devas and Devtas come to Earth to bless all the universal beings and rid them of their sins and miseries.

Legend Behind Pradosh Vrat

Neelakanta

Legend says that, during the Churning of the ocean of Milk by the devas and the asuras, the serpent King Vasuki underwent a lot pain. This lead to him spitting out poison into the ocean which led to chaos among the devas and asuras. The poison got mixed with the ocean and posed a threat to the whole universe. All the devas turned to Lord Shiva for help, so Lord Shiva on hearing the cries of the devas and mankind, collected the poison in a pot and drank the poison called halahal. Goddess Parvati made the poison freeze in his throat thus making his throat blue in color. This incident got Lord Shiva the name Neelakanta. This gesture of Lord shiva saved the universe from destruction.

As such every month Pradosh Vrat is observed to please Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and get their blessings to lead a life filled with happiness and contentment.
