Dev Uthani Ekadashi or Prabhodhini Ekadashi is observed in the Kartik month as per the Hindu Calendar. The day is celebrated on the 11th day during the waxing phase of the Moon, or Shukla Paksha. Lord Krishna says that if a person fasts on Ekadashi, he or she burns all the sins.

Legends say that Lord Vishnu wakes up on this day, after a 4-month long sleep which starts on Dev Shayani Ekadashi. Dev Uthani Ekadashi is celebrated with enthusiasm, as it brings the season of marriages and other auspicious ceremonies. As per Nirnaya Sindhu, the best day to end fast and perform Tulsi Vivah is the Kartik Shudha Dwadashi.
