The word ‘Dhan’ means wealth and ‘Teras’ means thirteen. Dhanteras is celebrated two days before Diwali and people worship the lord of wealth Lord Kuber. This is a very important festival for businessmen. In India, people buy steel utensils, gold or diamond jewelleries or broomsticks as a sign of wealth and prosperity. In Hindu mythology, Lord Kuber is respected as a protector of world. He is said to be one of the richest demi-gods in the heavenly planets. Lord Kuber is also known as the god of Yakshas (savage beings).
It is said that Lord Kuber credited money to god Venkateshwara for his marriage with Padmavati. In memory of this, people visit Tirupati to donate money in Venkateshwara’s donation pot so that he can pay back his debt to Lord Kuber. The festival of Dhanteras is celebrated with great joy and excitement. The utensils/jewellery bought on this day is then used to worship Goddess Laxmi on the Diwali day. This festival is believed to bring prosperity and riches to the devotees.
