Hartalika Teej is a festival of womanhood which is celebrated mostly in Northern part of India. Women around the states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh celebrate this festival with much zeal and euphoria. On this day, married and unmarried women observe fast in order to charm Goddess Parvati. Married women keep fast for the entire day for longevity of their husband and unmarried women observe fast to get blessed with a suitable match for them.

According to Hindu calendar, Hartalika Teej falls on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Bhadrapada month. In 2015, Hartalika Teej will be celebrated on September 16. Puja for Hartalika Teej can be done two times in a day i.e. in the morning (Pratahkal Hartalika Puja) and the evening (Pradosh Kaal Hartalika Puja). If due to some reasons morning Puja is not possible, one can opt for an evening Puja.

Fast observed on Hartalika Teej is a little similar to that done on Karva Chauth. Many women keep Nirjala (abstaining from drinking water) fast for the longevity of their husbands. Puja For Hartalika Teej


According to our Hindu mythology, it took Goddess Parvati 108 births to please Lord Shiva to marry her. Parvati showed her deep love by fasting and worshipping in Himalayas for her beloved Lord Shiva and the rest is history. Lord Shiva finally got impressed and married Goddess Parvati.

Since then, on this day, idols of God Shiva and Parvati are worshipped and placed at the place of worship in house and temples. Lord Parvati idol is carried in palanquins followed by elephants and camels in some states like Rajasthan on this day.

Here is the Puja Vidhi for Hartalika Puja:
  1. Put forth sweets, flower, and rice in turmeric powder along with some coins in front of the God idols.
  2. Focus your thoughts on the welfare of your husband and recite Hartalika Vrat Katha.
  3. Offer prayers to Parvati and Shiva.
Evening Puja marks the end of Hartalika fast. Women end their fast by drinking water and sweets that are generally offered by their husbands. They touch their husband’s feet and are offered with gifts as well as blessings.
