Papankusha Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Hindu month Ashwin. Like every Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu is the deity of this day. However, Lord Padmanabha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu is worshiped on Papankusha Ekadashi.

It is believed that the one who observes fast on this day, goes to heaven after death. It is also said that by observing Papankusha Ekadashi fast, one earns benefits which are more than those earned by performing 1000 Ashwamedha Yagya or 100 Surya Yagya.

Talking about the legend associated with Papankusha Ekadashi fast, there was a hunter named, Krodhana, who committed sinful acts throughout his life. On the day before he died, he observed Papankusha Ekadashi fast, as suggested by saint Angira. As a result, he got relief from his evil acts and attained heaven after death.

Papankusha Ekadashi 2014: Rituals Of The Day


Rituals plays a very important role in observance of every fast. Hence, there are some rituals that are to be followed on Papankusha Ekadashi:
  • Wake up early in the morning and dress up in clean clothes
  • Papankusha Ekadashi fast starts a day before i.e. on Dashmi (the tenth day of Hindu month)
  • Worship the six cereals: rice, Moong (green grams), wheat, barley, gram, and Urad (black lentil)
  • Avoid any sinful act on this day and do not speak lie
  • Avoid eating salts and spices
  • Chant devotional songs throughout the night and please Lord Vishnu
  • The fast completes on Dwadashi (the twelfth day of Hindu month)

Event Of The Day!


Today is Durga Visarjan. Celebrations of Durga Puja come to an end on this day. Idols of Maa Durga are worshiped with dedication and are then immersed in water.
