The name of Dhanteras comes from Dhanvantari, the lord of medicine. It is believed that during Samudra Manthan, a combat arose between the gods and demons. Then, Dhanvantari emerged from Kshira Sagar (ocean of milk) with a pot of Amrit (divine nectar). This came to be known as the advent of Ayurveda. Since then, this day is dedicated to Dhanvantri Dev.
The day is also popular as Yama Deep Daan, as the day also contain certain evidences that is associated with Lord Yama (lord of death). King Hima’s son was predicted to die because of snake’s bite on the fourth day of his marriage. When the prince’s wife came to know of this, she tried desperately to protect her husband’s life from his destined death. Even when, Lord Yama came in their house in the disguised form of a snake, the wife was finally able to put her devotion into practicality. Thus, she saved her husband from death. This represents the elimination of darkness, as death symbolizes darkness.

Dhan Teras 2014: Procedures & Rituals Of The Day
Following are the rituals that are followed on the day of Dhanteras:
- Lighting Diyas (earthen lamps) is a special attraction on Dhanteras. During evening, Diyas are lightened at homes. It symbolizes enlightenment piercing into the darkness of materialistic pleasures.
- A Diya is known as Yamadeep, lit to honor Yama Deva (the lord of death).
- Then, holy water is offered to Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber from the copper vessel.
- After this, the Dhanteras Puja is performed using grains, roli etc.
- Sweets are offered.
- It is also a part of the ritual that women circumambulate around the Diya four times, on Dhan Trayodashi.
