According to Hindu Calendar (Panchang), the Purnima of the month of Kartik is known as the Kartik Purnima. This year, i.e. in 2014, it is occurring on Thursday, the 6th of November. Kartik Purnima is important for the followers of both, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Kartik Purnima is also known as Tripuri Purnima. The Sikh community celebrates Prakash Utsav on this day, due to Guru Nanak Jayanti.
As per mythological scriptures, this is the day when Lord Vishnu took his first incarnation on earth. Lord Vishnu took his Matsya Avatar (incarnation of fish) to save the earth. Besides this, Lord Shiva has killed the dreadful demon, Tripur on this day. Accordingly, all the Gods and Lord Vishnu himself, named him as Tripurari and thus, this day is also known as Tripurari Purnima.
As per beliefs, bathing either in river Ganga, any other holy river or at any religious place, followed by giving alms, brings prosperity, longevity and disease free life. While followers of Lord Shiva worship him, on the other hand Lord Vishnu is worshiped by his followers, on this day. Donating calves is also significant, on this day.
It is believed that if Bharani Nakshatra (constellation) is there on this day, it becomes more significant. As this year, Bharani Nakshatra is prevailing during Moonrise; hence, importance of this Kartik Purnima is manifold.
