This year, Dussehra is falling on 8 October 2019, Tuesday. Of the many significant festivals that we celebrate in India, Dussehra is a symbol of the victory of good over evil. Two stories are associated with this saying – Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana, and the slaughter of Mahishasur by Goddess Durga. This day falls on the tenth day (Dashami tithi) of Ashwin month, and thus has two famous names – Vijayadashami (Vijaya = victory) and Dussehra.
When Is Dussehra 2019
Note: This Vijayadashami Muhurat is valid for New Delhi, India.
As per the Western calendar, Dussehra is falling on 8 October 2019 this year. On the other hand, Hindu Panchang states that the celebrations occur during the Aprahan of the tenth day (Dashmi tithi) of Shukla Paksha in Ashwin month. This Kaal takes place from the tenth muhurat to the twelfth muhurat from sunrise. Therefore, if the Dashami tithi transpires for two days, and the Aprahan Kaal occurs during the second day then we commemorate Vijay Dashami on this day. Similarly, if Aprahan is on the first day itself, then so will be the celebration for Dussehra.
