Importance of Mauni Amavasya

According to old beliefs, Lord Manu was born on this day. According to astro experts, those who are unable to fast on this day should only eat sweetened food. As it is clear from the name, people keep fast by staying silent the whole day. On this day, bathing in holy reservoirs & rivers and offering libation or Tarpan to ancestors brings peace to them.

It is believed that Vak-Siddhi (वाक्य सिद्धि) or strong power on speech is attained by fasting on this day. Accordingly, it goes by the name of Gungi (Mute) Amavasya at few places. Some devotees remain silent before taking the bath, and few else receive the fruits by fasting the whole day while remaining silent. There is a significant role of offering Arghya to Lord Sun as few scholars believe that poverty in the house will be removed by doing such activity on this day.
