When to Celebrate Mahashivratri?
As per Hindu Calendar, Mahashivratri is celebrated on 14th day (Chaturdashi) of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalgun. As per Gregorian Calendar, this auspicious occasion occur in between the month of February and March. Mahashivratri 2018 will be celebrated on February 13 & 14. The reason being that Trayodashi tithi (or 13th day) is falling on February 13, but from 10:36 PM at night Chaturdashi tithi (14th day) will start. This Chaturdashi will remain till midnight 12 of February 14. That is why, this auspicious occasion will be celebrated on different dates in different locations.

Mahashivratri Puja Vidhi
Rudrabhishek of Lord Shiva is of great significance on this occasion. It is believed that performing Rudrabhishek of Shivji destroys all diseases, sorrows and sufferings of a person and also grants them their desired wishes. Devotees can perform following Puja Vidhi on Mahashivratri to get blessings of the God:
- Eat only one time on 13th Day (Trayodashi) and avoid food for whole day on Chaturdashi. During this period, only fruits and milk should be taken.
- After taking a bath in early morning, vow for the fast. Then, decorate a Mandap for Puja. After that, perform the urn installation and establish Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati idol in it.
- Offer Akshat (Chawal), Pan, Supari, Gangajal, Bel leaves, yellow flowers, Dhature ka phal, milk, curd, honey, sandalwood etc to Lord Shiva.
- During midnight (Nishit Kaal), perform Jagrans, prayers and worship Lord Shiva. Also recite Shiv Chalisa and Shiv Sahasranama during this period.

Rudrabhishek of Lord Shiva according to Zodiac
Rudrabhishek means abhishek or bathing Lord Rudra which is considered highly auspicious. It is a way to appease Bholenath and seek his blessings for a good and prosperous future. It is believed that if a person performs Rudrabhishek of Shivji as per his/her Zodiac, its influence increases tenfold. Also, chanting of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra on this occasion is considered highly auspicious and holy.
