September 5, 2014 is the auspicious day of Padma Ekadashi. As per the Hindu Calendar, Padma Ekadashi is celebrated on the eleventh day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month, Bhadrapada. The significance of Padma Ekadashi increases as the day is blessed with glory of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.

Padma Ekadashi: Puja Muhurat


It is always better to perform Puja during a certain auspicious Muhurat. The reason being that during this time, the energies in the universe become auspicious; this condition helps in increasing the auspiciousness of the results obtained.

The two very auspicious Muhurats of this Padma Ekadashi are given below (for the region of Delhi):
  • Padma Ekadashi Puja Muhurat in the morning: From 5.00 a.m. to 7.00 a.m.
  • Padma Ekadashi Puja Muhurat in the evening: From 5:40 p.m. to 7:05 p.m.

Padma Ekadashi: Significance


  • The observance of Padma Ekadashi Vrat is helpful in eliminating all the sins of previous birth. The one who worships Lord Vishnu with full faith and devotion, becomes desirable of the divine favors of Lord Vishnu. The lord himself frees the person from his sins and evils.
  • Goddess Lakshmi also blesses the devotees with her extreme favor which leads to a happy and prosperous life. Observance of Padma Ekadashi Vrat leads to elimination of all the shortfalls of life.

Padma Ekadashi: Legend


Once, there was a King named Mandhata, who was was very kind and generous. Happiness and prosperity used to prevail in his kingdom. However, due to no rain for more than 3 years, his kingdom came under the impact of drought. For finding a solution for the same, the king visited a saint and asked for help. The saint advised him to observe Padma Ekadashi fast, as it would bestow him with blessings and glory of Lord Vishnu.

The king observed Padma Ekadashi fast and worshiped Lord Vishnu with full faith and devotion. As a result, his kingdom regained the lost prosperity and happiness, with the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

Padma Ekadashi: Rituals


Rituals of any Hindu festival are helpful in gaining the full advantage of the auspiciousness of the day. Let’s talk about the rituals of Padma Ekadashi in detail:
  1. Wake up early in the morning and perform all the daily rituals like taking bath and wearing clean clothes.
  2. Devotees can visit the nearest temple to worship Lord Vishnu or can establish an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu at the Puja Sthan in home.
  3. Worship Lord Vishnu and offer fruits, sweets, and flowers to the deity.
  4. Worshiping Goddess Lakshmi on the day of Padma Ekadashi, has a very special significance.
  5. While worshiping the Lord, take oath of observing a day long fast.
  6. Prepare Satvik (vegetarian) food at home and offer it to the Brahmins.
By following the rituals listed above, one can gain the auspiciousness of the day to its fullest. Observe the fast and eliminate all the shortcomings of life, with the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.
