Kartik Purnima, also widely known as Dev Diwali or Tripuri Purnima falls on the full moon day in the month of Kartik. This day is particularly celebrated with much enthusiasm as it has many legends associated with it. According to the scriptures, on Kartik Purnima, a demon called Tripura was defeated by Lord Shiva. Mainly, Lord Kartikeya is worshipped on this day along with Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. 

This year, Kartik Purnima will be celebrated on the 14th of November. 

KARTIK PURNIMA: RITUALS

The day of Prabodhini Ekadashi is of particular importance when we talk about Kartik Purnima. As per the scriptures, Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu’s four month long sleep terminated on Prabodhini Ekadashi. Prabodhini Ekadashi marks the onset of many festivities in different parts of India. Many fairs, expos and carnivals begin on Prabodhini Ekadashi and last till Kartik Purnima. 

On Kartik Purnima, devotees perform Kartik Snaan, which is a holy bath to be taken on the eve of Kartik Purnima. Kartik Snaan is performed twice, at sunrise and at moonrise on Kartik Purnima. After the evening Kartik Snaan, devotees perform prayers for Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma, Angira Rishi, Lord Surya and Lord Kartikeya. Also, Satyanarayan Katha can be performed on this auspicious day. 

Holy food called Annakoot is offered to God, post all the rituals and prayers. On the day of Kartik Purnima, any sort of violence, shaving, cutting of hair, cutting of trees, plucking of fruits and flowers, crop harvest and sexual union are strictly barred. Making donations, especially of cows, feeding Brahmins and observing fast, on this felicitous day, is believed to be prosperous. Endowment of Gold on Kartik Purnima is believed to be opportune. 

To acknowledge the night of Dev Diwali, lamps are lit in temples for the entire night. In this duration, all temples, places of worship and the Ghats of Varanasi are decorated magnificently. Lighting 360 lamps or 720 wicks at the place of worship of Kartik Purnima is believed to provide Moksha to the doer. In this process of lighting lamps, 360 lamps or 720 wicks symbolise the 360 days and nights of the year. 

On this day, Diyas and lamps are given to priests and flown in water. This day is also known as Kartika Diparatna as the lamps bear the radiance of vividly-hued gems. Areas around sacred plants and trees such as Tulsi, Amla and the sacred Fig are also kept well lit and decorated. According to popular beliefs, by seeing the holy light of these lamps and Diyas birds, animals and other living creatures will attain liberation from this mortal world.

KARTIK PURNIMA: OTHER EVENTS ON THIS DAY

Kartik Purnima is also known to be the day of birth of Matsya which is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of a fish. Lord Kartikeya, the God of War and son of Lord Shiva, is known to share his birthday with Matsya. Also, Vrinda, the incarnation of Tulsi is believed to be born on Kartik Purnima. 

Kartik Purnima has special significance for the devotees of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha. As per popular beliefs, on this day, Lord Krishna had adored Goddess Radha and consummated the act of Rasalila with her. 

Apart from these events, Kartik Purnima is also dedicated to Pitrs, the dead ancestors.

MRITYUNJAYA HAVAN

Though performing Maha Mrityunjaya Havan is considered to be auspicious on the day of Purnima but it is not religiously practised. The Havan begins by building a Havan Kund and placing firewood in it. Gradually Ghee is added to the burning fire while chanting the Mantra. The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is used to pray to Lord Shiva.

Guru Nanak Jayanti 2016: About Guru Nanak

The first Guru of Sikhs, Guru Nanak incepted Sikhism. It was on April 15, 1469 when he was born in Rai-Bhoi-Di Talwandi, which is now at Sheikhupura, a district of Pakistan and now known as Nankana Sahib. Guru Nanak Dev ji’s birthday is celebrated on Kartik Purnima (Full Moon night in Hindu month Kartik), as per the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. The Gregorian Calendar shows that Guru Nanak’s birthday falls in the month of November. The relation between Lunatic Calendar and Gregorian Calendar is such that the date changes every year. 

Guru Nanak Jayanti 2016: The Festival

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated with a great devotion all over the world. The celebration is similar everywhere, only the chants may differ depending on the region. To begin with the celebration, Prabhat Pheri is conducted. It is a ritual in which people sing hymns on the street at 4 A.M. and they greet other Sikh families. It is vibrant and musical. Those who conduct Prabhat Pheri, begins it from Gurudwara. Sikhs follow it religiously and they spread enlightenment by singing beautiful canticles and also by lighting lamps.

Two days prior to the festival, Akhand Path is organized in most of the Gurudwaras. The preachers recite Guru Granth Sahib continuously for 48 hours. It was the day when many Sikhs assembled as per the invitation given to them by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. He wanted to know who was brave enough, to sacrifice their life for the betterment of mankind. He announced it as an act of honor. The man who can sacrifice his life exemplifies that death cannot haunt them. One man volunteered and he was accompanied by Guru Nanak to the tent. He came out with the blood spilled all over his sword. He then asked for more volunteers and every time he came out with blood on his sword. This process came to an end after he took the 5th man inside the tent. Later, he came out with all five men by his side and they were not at all hurt. He sprinkled holy water on them and announced them as the purest men ever to walk on the face of earth. These 5 men were given the status of Panj Pyare. Guru Nanak then asked them to sprinkle holy water at him too. Since then it has become a ritual to chose 5 pure people, who are then given a distinction of Panj Pyare.

Guru Nanak Jayanti 2016: Nagar Kirtan

One of the prime events of the festival of Guru Nanak Jayanti includes Nagar Kirtan. This procession is lead by The Panj Pyares. They hold a flag called Nishan Sahib and Palki of Guru Granth Sahib. A team of other devotees sing chants in chorus, as they follow the Panj Pyares. They also showcase various arts, like mock battles which involves weapons and martial arts. The event signifies the strength of the Sikh community.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi or Prabodhini Ekadashi is believed to be a very propitious day. Prabodhini Ekadashi, literally meaning ‘the awakening eleventh’, is celebrated on the Ekadashi tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik. This day is devoted to Lord Vishnu and is celebrated to acknowledge the end of his sleep which had begun on Dev Shayani Ekadashi. The legend associated with this day has given it many names like Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Dev-Prabodhini and Deothan.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi: Date & Timing

This year, Dev Uthani Ekadashi will be celebrated on the 10th of November which is the Ekadashi tithi of Shukla Paksha of the month of Kartik. The fast of Dev Uthani Ekadashi should ideally be broken at Parana Muhurat and should be terminated by Dwadashi Tithi which falls on the succeeding day. 

The Muhurat timing for Ekadashi Parana Muhurat is 06:41 AM to 08:51 AM on 12 November 2016. Ekadashi Tithi begins at 11:21 AM on 10 November 2016. Ekadashi Tithi Ends at 09:12 AM on 11 November 2016. 

Dev Uthani Ekadashi: Legend 

According to the popular legend, the irregular sleeping pattern of Lord Vishnu was leading to a lot of problems on Prithvi Lok and for the Devas. Sometimes Lord Vishnu would sleep for days incessantly and sometimes he wouldn’t sleep at all. This made Goddess Lakshmi upset and concerned. Because of Lord Vishnu’s erratic sleeping pattern Devas had to wait for days to meet him. Moreover, the Asuras were taking advantage of this fact and were spreading Adharma on Prithvi Lok. After consistent requests by Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu decided to come up with a solution for this problem. 

In the meantime, Devas informed Lord Vishnu of the theft of Vedas by a demon called Sankhyayan. After fighting for days on end, Lord Vishnu defeated Sankhyayan and got back the Vedas from him. After the exhausting fight and reacquisition of Vedas, Lord Vishnu slept on Ashadha Ekadashi for four months uninterruptedly and woke up on Kartik Ekadashi. Hence, the day of Kartik Ekadashi is also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi. This legend gave birth to the celebrations of Dev Uthani Ekadashi. 

Dev Uthani Ekadashi: Celebration

On the day of Dev Uthani Ekadashi, devotees take a holy bath, early in the morning, and perform the ritual of marriage of Tulsi plant and Lord Vishnu. This ritual is also called Tulsi Vivah. 

The fast of Prabodhini Ekadashi begins on Dashmi, a day before Ekadashi, and continues till Dwadashi, which is the day after the day of Ekadashi. The fast should be broken on Dwadashi, as per the Parana Muhurat.

It is believed that Dev Uthani Ekadashi is one of the ways to attain salvation. If one celebrates Dev Uthani Ekadashi with utmost sincerity and follows all the rituals with absolute devotion, then he/she will receive Moksha after death and will be able to reach Vishnu Lok. The day of Dev Uthani Ekadashi is also known to have the boon to give Moksha to the souls of one’s ancestors.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi: Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, the day of Dev Uthani is devoted to a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, Lord Vithoba. This day is celebrated with much fervor at Pandharpur where devotees assemble in huge numbers for a period of five days. The prayers and festivities held at Pandharpur are also known as Sarkari Puja.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi: Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, Dev Uthani Ekadashi takes a more fun avatar. Devotees celebrate this auspicious day in the form of Pushkar Mela at Pushkar in Rajasthan. The festivities beginning on Ekadashi end by Kartik Purnima. Pushkar Mela is organised to worship Lord Brahma and to put together Asia’s largest Camel Fair. It is believed that taking a holy bath in Pushkar lake on this particular day brings one closer to attaining Moksha. 

Dev Uthani Ekadashi: Gujarat

In Gujarat, it is believed that Lord Vishnu resides around Mt. Girnar during Dev Uthani Ekadashi. Hence, the devotees organise a two day long parikrama around the mountain to pay their respect and ardor. Every year, about 80,000 devotees gather around Mt. Girnar for worshipping Lord Vishnu on this particular day.

Tulsi Vivah is the nuptial bond between Lord Vishnu and the Tulsi plant, also called the Holy Basil. Tulsi literally means something that’s unexampled. In Hinduism, Tulsi plant has a particular and an incomparable significance. No Hindu household is believed to be complete without a Tulsi plant at the entrance. It is believed that by planting it at the entrance of the house, one makes way for positive energy and good fortune to come in. 

This year, Tulsi Vivah will be celebrated on the 11th of November. 

As per the popular belief, Tulsi is considered to be a personification of Goddess Lakshmi, the beloved of Lord Vishnu. The ceremony of Tulsi Vivah can be carried out anytime between Prabodhini Ekadashi and Kartik Purnima, in the Hindu month of Kartik. This ceremony not only acknowledges the marital bond between Lord Vishnu and the Tulsi plant but also marks the end of Monsoon season and the onset of Hindu wedding season. Apart from the spiritual associations, the Tulsi plant has innumerable medicinal qualities as well. The Tulsi plant is known to cure a myriad of mental and physical diseases.

TULSI VIVAH CEREMONY

According to the customs, Tulsi Vivah is performed on the subsequent day after Kartik Ekadashi. Performing Tulsi Vivah endows the doer with the opportunity of performing Kanyadaan, as per popular beliefs. 

The ritual of Tulsi Vivah begins with dressing up the Tulsi plant in red clothes and bedecking her with ornaments, just as a bride. A stone or an image of Lord Vishnu is used to portray the groom. Then the bride and groom are tied together lightly by a cotton thread, symbolizing the gathbandhan of the couple. This is followed by the Mantra Ucharan and the marriage is solemnized by sprinkling vermillion mixed rice on the holy couple of Shaligram (the stone avatar of Lord Vishnu) and Tulsi. 

On the occasion of Tulsi Vivah, a special vegetarian meal is prepared to put forth as an offering to Shaligram and Tulsi. The felicitous day marks the onset of the Hindu wedding season.

TULSI VIVAH LEGENDS

There are many different legends linked to Tulsi Vivah. As per one of the legends, Tulsi was born as Vrinda, an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, and was married to a demon king called Jalandhar. As she could do nothing to stop her husband from doing bad deeds, she prayed regularly to nullify the adverse effects of his actions and ensure his safety from the Devas. But Jalandhar’s end was inevitable. To avoid breaking Vrinda’s heart, on the request of all Devas, Lord Vishnu took the form of Jalandhar and began living with Vrinda. On finding out the truth, Vrinda cursed Lord Vishnu and to punish him, changed him into a stone called Shaligram. She also cursed him to face separation from his wife in his next birth as Lord Rama. Vrinda couldn’t bear the death of her husband and collapsed to take the form of Tulsi plant from her remains. Since then the ritual of using Tulsi leaves while worshipping Lord Vishnu came into existence. As she was adored by Lord Vishnu, every year their holy union is celebrated as Tulsi Vivah. 

According to another legend, Lord Krishna once fell in love with a princess who was an incarnation of Tulsi. When Lord Krishna’s beloved found out about this she cursed Tulsi.

In another legend, at an auspicious event, Lord Krishna’s wife Satyabhama insisted on weighing him against gold and donating all of it. In spite of putting all the gold against Lord Krishna, he still weighed more than the gold. Seeing this, Lord Krishna’s other wife Rukmani suggested to put a Tulsi leaf on the gold pan. The gold pan immediately outweighed Lord Krishna.

TULSI VIVAH: SIGNIFICANCE OF TULSI

Tulsi plant and Tulsi Pujan is an integral part of every Hindu household. Tulsi plant is known to have countless medicinal traits apart from its spiritual facet as per which the Holy Basil is considered to be a Hindu Goddess. 

The Tulsi plant ebbs the pollution levels and purifies the air. Apart from being a purifier, this plant is also a mosquito and flies repellent. Also, Tulsi oil is an antidote to common health issues such as headaches, common cold and cough.
