Devshayani Ekadashi 2014: The Mythological Legend
As per the legend associated with Devshayani Ekadashi, once, there was a King named Mandata. Blessed with a kind heart and generous nature, the King was very popular in his kingdom. For the welfare of his people and kingdom, he was always engaged in performing good deeds and making charities. However, due to misfortune, no rain was received by his town for a consecutive period of three years. As a result, happiness and prosperity both got affected and everybody was seen under stress and worries. Mandata performed many auspicious rituals to restore back the lost prosperity, but all in vain.
To find a solution, the King began a journey and on his way he met many scholars and holy people. He disclosed his problem to them, but was not able to get any solution. One fine day, Mandata met Sage Angira. He narrated his problem to the Sage and asked for help. Angira advised him to observe Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat and worship Lord Vishnu with pure mind and soul. Mandata thanked the Sage, observed the Vrat and prayed to the deity. His devotion pleased Lord Vishnu and it rained heavily in his kingdom. As a result, the lost prosperity came back once again and his people got their peaceful and happy life back.
It is from that day, devotees started observing Devshayani Ekadashi. On this pious day, people worship and honor Lord Vishnu with all they can.
Devshayani Ekadashi 2014: Puja Vidhi

- Devshayani Vrat begins from the night of Dashami
- Following morning, devotees get up early, take bath and prepare themselves for Pooja

The period of four months between Devshayani Ekadashi to Prabodhini Ekadashi is known as Chaturmas. Any auspicious activity is not performed during these four months.
