Festival of Guru Purnima is celebrated on Purnima of Ashadh month. On this day, worshipping teachers (Guru) and God is of prime importance. According to English Calendar, this festival occurs in the month of July or August. This year, the festivities of the day will be tomorrow on July 27, 2018. On the same day, second Lunar Eclipse (Chandra Grahan) of the year will also occur. Therefore, it will be important to perform Puja and other rituals of Guru Purnima before Sutak Kaal (inauspicious period) of Chandra Grahan begins.
Note: Sutak Kaal of Chandra Grahan will begin from 12:27 PM at noon on July 27. Perform any auspicious ritual and other activities before this period.
In Hinduism, a Guru holds the highest position. It is Gurus only who guide students onto the path of righteousness and bright future. So, to pay adoration to them and seek their blessings, Guru Purnima is celebrated. It is also believed that the composer of Mahabharata, Rishi Ved Vyasa was born on this day, therefore, this day is also known as Vyasa Purnima. Sage Vyasa is worshipped on this day and in his memory, everyone pays homage to their Gurus and adored deities.

Guru Purnima Puja Vidhi
To pay reverence to your Guru on this auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima, one should perform following things:
- On the day of Guru Purnima, wake up early in the morning and take a bath.
- Approach your Guru after putting on clean and tidy clothes.
- Offer a dignified seat to your adored Guru and worship him/her with flowers, fruits, etc.
- Offer Dakshina (as a token of respect) to your Guru and seek their blessings.
- On this day, also respect other elders such as your father, mother, siblings, etc who have taught you good things in life.
- Learn lessons of life (Guru Mantra) from your teachers. Also, worship your adored God (Isht Dev) on this day.
Significance of Guru Purnima
In Vedas, Guru is placed superior to the trinity Gods (Tridev), i.e. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. It is because Guru is the one who makes you aware of your capabilities, enlightens you and guide you to the path of success. In ancient period, students who studied in Gurukul used to celebrate this day and worship their Gurus with great enthusiasm and fervour. Circumambulation of Govardhan mountain on the occasion of Guru Purnima also holds great significance. Furthermore, bathing in holy rivers, deities worship in temples and holy feasts are also organized on this day. Additionally, teachers are honoured by their students in schools and other educational institutions.
Tradition of Guru-Shishya (teacher-student) has been going on for centuries in Hindu religion and Indian culture. And that is why, to express one’s feeling of respect towards their Guru, this day of Guru Purnima is celebrated.
