Akshaya Tritiya is a widely celebrated festival in India, by the people of Hindu and Jain community. The word Akshaya means undiminishing, and Tritiya signifies third day. It is believed that any work started on this day is bound to give the desired results. Also, the birth of Lord Parshuram, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is celebrated on the same day as Parshuram Jayanti. Akshaya Tritiya is also known as Akha Teej or Akti. Significance of Akshaya Tritiya


Akshaya Tritiya is regarded as a Sarva Siddha Muhurat. It is a day when any sort of auspicious activity like marriage, Grah Pravesh, etc. can be started without even looking at the Panchang. According to the Puranas, Pind Daan offered to the ancestors on the day of Akshaya Tritiya proves to be fruitful.It is believed that bathing in Ganga on this auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya helps in eliminating and repenting sins. It is an auspicious Muhurta for beginning anything new, buying any kind of stuff, and especially for buying gold.

Religious significance of Akshaya Tritiya


Lord Brahma and all other deities are pleased if sandalwood water and Modak are offered to them on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. It is believed that donating food, clothing, gold, water, etc. on Akshaya Tritiya, opens the doors of Surya Loka. Any person who fasts on this day is bestowed with immense wealth and prosperity.

Astrological significance of Akshaya Tritiya


According to the Vedic Astrology, there are three and a half Akshaya Tithis in a year, which are considered auspicious. These three and a half Tithis are collectively known as Sadhe Teen Akshaya Muhurat. The third Tithi of the month of Vaishakha (Akshaya Tritiya) is considered to be the best and supreme of all these auspicious Tithis. It is believed that the luminaries, the Sun and the Moon, are at their extreme brightness on this day, signifying a favourable period.

Why is Akshaya Tritiya celebrated?


There are a number of reasons behind the celebration of Akshaya Tritiya, given as follows:

  • Parashurama Jayanti 

Lord Vishnu’s sixth incarnation was born on Akshaya Tritiya. Initially named as Ramabhadra, the incarnation was given the holy responsibility of releasing Mother Goddess from demons, for which he was gifted a weapon called Parashu by Lord Shiva himself, thus earning the name Parshurama. The birth of this incarnation is celebrated as Parshuram Jayanti by devotees with joy and fervour. 

  • Mahabharata

The holy day of Akshaya Tritiya has a sacred connection with Mahabharata too. It is believed that the Satya Yuga (Golden Age), commenced on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. Also, the greatest Acharya (teacher) of the Sanatan Dharma, started writing the epic Mahabharata on the glorious day of Akshaya Tritiya. It is also believed that the Sun God (Lord Surya) gifted the Akshaya Patra (an enchanted pot which had a never ending supply of food) to the Pandavas, on the day of Akshaya Tritiya.

  • The Krishna-Sudama reunion

After a timespan of many years, on the day of Akshaya Tritiya Lord Krishna got visited by his childhood friend, Sudama. Lord Krishna embraced him, and welcomed him in a grand way, bestowed upon him his love, kindness and blessings, and this marked a turning point in Sudama’s life, as he achieved things, he couldn’t have even dreamt of.
