According to the Hindu Panchang, Bhai dooj celebrations occur every second day (dwitiya tithi) of Shukla Paksha. Throughout the country, various names are famous for the festival, like Bhai Tika, Bhratri Dwitiya, and Bhai Phota.

Mythology states that on the second day of Shukla Paksh in the Krishna month, when Yamuna, sister of Yamraj asked him to visit her home for dinner, he went to her. Thus, on this day, devotees also worship Yamraj, the God of Death and the day has another name, Yam Dwitiya. 

Customs of Bhai Dooj

Although, the people on the Indian soil commemorate numerous festivals; however, Bhai Dooj has a special place of its own, amongst them all. Just as there are specific rituals and customs to follow during any festival, the ones associated with Bhai Dooj are given below:

1. This is a day of joy and excitement for siblings. Brothers and sisters should wake up early and take a bath on this pious day. 
2. Now, sisters have to prepare a thali for puja, filled with necessary items like flowers, sweets, kumkum, diya, and so on. Do the aarti of your brother and apply tilak on their forehead.
3. For the tilak, you can prepare a chalk out of a mix of rice and kumkum, and put a tika on your brother’s forehead using it during the auspicious muhurat.
4. After the tilak, sisters should offer sweets to their brother; and brothers should give their sisters a gift. 
5. On this day, the siblings should talk about their emotions and keep love and affection in their hearts for each other.

Mythological Tale Associated With Bhai Dooj

Natives have been celebrating the auspicious festival of Bhai Dooj since ancient times, as proven by the story below. This tale tells us about Lord Krishna and a demon named Narakasura.

Once upon a time, a demon Narakasura had been terrorizing the people. To save themselves, everyone went to Lord Krishna for help, who immediately agreed and killed the demon. According to the story, Lord Krishna returned to Dwarka on the second day of Shukla Paksha in the Krishna month after killing the demon. Diwali According to Hindu Panchang

Diwali falls on the day of Amavasya (New Moon), i.e., when there is no moon in the sky. In the Kartik Month, during the Pradosh Kaal of Amavasya, we celebrate Deepavali and worship Goddess Mahalakshmi. If the Amavasya Tithi continues for two days and Pradosh Kaal occurs only during the second day, Diwali is celebrated on that day. There are many other beliefs associated with the commemoration of Deepavali, but this one is most prevalent. 

Things to Remember During Laxmi Puja

During Diwali, one of the major festivals of Hinduism; devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi. Additionally, we also pay homage to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati on this day. People clean their houses and places of worship because they believe that the Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi herself descends to Earth on this day and blesses her devotees. Some important things to remember during Lakshmi Puja are:

• Like every festival, bathing and meditating early in the morning have high importance, on Diwali as well.
• Next, you should clean your place of worship at home.
• Sprinkle Gangajal or Gomutra around your house to cleanse it.
• Chant the Gayatri Mantra or ‘ऊँ नम: शिवाय/ūm̐ nama: śivāya’ to purify your heart.
• Draw a beautiful rangoli and place diyas on it.
• After cleaning your place of worship, spread a red cloth and establish the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha.
• Light a diya (lamp) and offer lamp, molly/kalawa (sacred red thread), water, rice, jaggery etc. to the deities.

Narak Chaturdashi in 2019

Interestingly, this year, Narak Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali) and Diwali, both are occurring on the same day. This is because the dates, Chaturdashi and Amavasya, according to Hindu Panchang, are coinciding on the same day. While Chaturdashi will continue till 12:25:25 on 27 October 2019, and then Amavasya will begin, which will end at 09:10:52 next morning. Devotees worship Lord Yamraj, the God of Death on this day (Choti Diwali/Narak Chaturdashi), and pray for freedom from the fear of death (Mrityu Bhay) and untimely/premature death.

The festival of Kali Chaudas is celebrated on the day before Diwali i.e. on the Chaturdashi tithi in Krishna Paksha during the month of Kartik. Why Kali Chaudas Is Celebrated

According to the beliefs, the festival of Kali Chaudas is celebrated to commemorate Lord Vishnu's victory over a demon named Narakasura. This festival is also associated with worshipping Maa Kali. This day signifies the importance of Tantric learning and carrying out Tantric acts. Also, Maa Kali is considered the goddess of Tantric teachings. It is said that if a devotee pleases Mother Kali on this day, then s/he attains Ashta Siddhi. Worshiping Goddess Kali on the day of Kali Chaudas eliminates physical and mental troubles from the lives of the devotees.

Significance of Abhyang Snan on Kali Chaudas

Abhyang Snan or Bath holds great importance on the day of Narak Chaturdashi. It is believed that if a devotee performs the bathing ritual during the auspicious time, s/he gets rid of her/his fear of death and Hell (Narak). Before taking a bath, massage your body with sesame seed oil, then put Apamarga (Chirchira) leaves in the water and then perform the Abhyang Snan. One appeases the Yamraj by following the steps and gets rid of the sins and fear of untimely death.

• Take a bath before sunrise in the morning.
• During this while, massage the body with sesame oil.
• After that, circle the Apamarga i.e. Chirchira (medicinal plant) leaves around your head three times.
• Before this, keep a water-filled urn or pot on the day of Ahoi Ashtami in Kartik Krishna Paksha.
• On the day of Kali Chaudas, mix this water before bathing.
• After bathing, pray to Lord Yamraj with folded hands while facing towards the South.
• On this day, place an oil lamp or diya outside the main door of the house in regard with Lord Yamraj.
• After worshipping all the deities in the evening, light oil lamps and place them on both sides of the door frame, outside the house and at the entrance of the workplace.

• On this day during the Nishith Kaal (at the time of midnight), one should throw away useless things from home. This tradition is called Daridraya Nih Saaran.

Mythological Legend Related To Kali Chaudas (Narak Chaturdashi)

According to the legend, a demon named Narakasura had terrorized the Gods and Sages with his powers and took sixteen thousand women as his hostage. Troubled by the terror, all the Gods and Saints approached the divine Lord Krishna and asked for his help. Listening to their plight, the Lord assured everyone regarding the elimination of the demon.

According to a curse, Narkasur would die at the hands of a woman. Therefore, Shri Krishna, with the help of his wife Satyabhama; killed Narakasura on Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month and freed sixteen thousand women from his captivity. Later on, these women were hailed as the “Patraniyan” of the Lord. After Narkasur was killed, natives celebrated the occasion by lighting diyas in their homes on the Amavasya during the month of Kartik.
