Vat Savitri Purnima Vrat Auspicious Muhurat & Worshipping Rituals

Every Purnima that comes in a month holds high significance in Hinduism, but the one that comes during the month of Jyeshtha is believed to be sacred and holy. According to religious beliefs, bathing and donating on this day seems to be very important. It is said that if a devotee conducts the Ganga Snan or bathing in the Ganges, carry out the Puja and then make donations, then his/her desires and wishes get fulfilled. In several states, Jyeshtha Poornima is also known as Vat Poornima Vrat and celebrated with fervour, whose significance and puja rituals are similar to that of Vat Savitri Vrat. According to the Skanda Purana and Bhavishyottara Purana, Vat Savitri Vrat must be observed during the month of Jyeshtha. This is the reason why women in Gujarat, Maharashtra and several states of South India observe the Vat Savitri Vrat on Jyeshtha Purnima. On the other hand, this fast is observed on the day of Jyeshtha Amavasya in the regions of Northern India.

Muhurat for Vat Purnima Vrat & It’s Importance

This year, the auspicious Poornima during the Jyeshtha month is falling on 16 June, 2019. As per astrology experts, if the date(tithi) of Purnima begins before midday or after sunset on Chaturdashi, then the fast must be kept on the previous day. This means that the fast should be observed on the Chaturdashi Viddha Poornima. Jyeshtha Poornima is not only significant for bathing and donating but also for venerating the Lord Shiva. Actually, this day marks the beginning of collecting the Ganga water in order to visit Amarnath and bathe Lord Shiva with it.

Jyeshtha Poornima or Vat Purnima Vrat Puja Rituals

As told above, Jyeshtha Poornima is also celebrated as Vat Purnima Vrat, which is why the same rituals for Vat Savitri Vrat can be followed while observing the Vat Purnima fast. On this day, the Banyan tree is worshipped with great honour and devotion.

On this day, women must wake up early, bathe and wear new clothes.
During the evening of Vat Savitri Puja, married women who are fasting must sit under the Banyan tree and worship Savitri Devi with a devoted heart.
Women must keep all the puja ingredients in a basket, stand under the tree and offer it water.
After this, Prasad must be offered to it and incense stick must also be lit.
During this time, fan the Vat tree using a hand fan made of bamboo and seek the blessings of Goddess Savitri by worshipping her.
After this step, married women must wish for longevity and good health of their husbands while circumambulating around the tree seven times and tying the sacred thread or moli around it.
In the end, listen to the story of Savitri-Satyawan.
After this, use the same hand fan for your husband and seek his blessings.
Then, consume the fruits offered as prasad and break your fast in the evening by eating something sweet.

Vat Savitri Purnima Vrat Puja Items

As per the Shastras, it is believed that just like Vat Purnima Vrat and Puja must be observed during the auspicious muhurat, right puja items and ingredients must also be used to receive favourable outcomes. For conducting the Vat Savitri Poornima puja, the items to be used are:

Idols of Satyavan-Savitri made of a cloth
A fan made of bamboo
A Red thread of yarn
Incense stick
A clay lamp
Ghee or Clarified Butter
Flowers and fruits
1.25 meters of cloth
2 vessels filled with water and mixed with vermilion
Roli or Sacred red thread

Importance of Banyan Tree on Vat Savitri Poornima

As per the scriptures, the word “Vat” and “Savitri” in Vat Savitri Vrat holds special significance. Just like the Peepal tree, the Vat or Banyan tree is also considered significant from the ancient times. As per religious scholars, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh reside within this tree. This is why worshipping the Banyan tree by sitting beneath it and listening to the Vrat Katha fulfills one’s desires. The Vat Tree is widely known for its trait of longevity, because this tree goes on to live for a very long time. On this day, married women worship this tree and pray for the longevity of their husbands from the Trimurti residing within the Banyan tree.

Vat Savitri Vrat Katha

As per mythological beliefs, Lady Savitri is seen as a devoted wife in the Indian culture. The name Savitri is also associated with Goddess Saraswati and Ved Mata Gayatri. Savitri was born under specific circumstances. In this subject itself, it is said that King Ashwapati had no offspring, and in order to fulfil his wish, he made one lakh offerings while chanting mantras. After doing this for eighteen years straight, Maa Savitri was pleased and she gave him the boon of a bright daughter. Eventually a daughter was born in his family, and he named him Savitri.

Savitri, the king’s daughter, was stunningly beautiful, which made the task of finding a deserving groom for her rather difficult. This became a reason of concern for the King. Seeing her father stressed regarding her marriage, she herself went out to search for the best match around the Tapovan. There, she saw Satyavan, the son of King Dyumatsena, and chose him as her ideal husband. Satyavan had the yoga of early death in his kundli and was a Veda Scholar. During the marriage, Narad Muni warned Savitri about the short lifespan of Satyavan, but she overheard everything and went ahead with the ceremony.

When his time of death approached, Savitri carried out great penance and fought with Lord Yamraj for her husband’s life. After seeing her dedication and loyalty, Lord Yamraj got pleased and asked her for a boon. Hence, Savitri wished for the longevity of her husband and saved her husband’s life.

This Gayatri Jayanti, Obtain The Blessings Of Goddess Gayatri!

Each year, Gayatri Jayanti is celebrated on the Dashami Tithi of Jyestha month during Shukla Paksha. However, there are various speculations associated with this festival. Thus, it is also celebrated on Shukla Paksha’s Ekdasahi Tithi in some places. Apart from this, the massive celebrations of Gayatri Jayanti take place on the Purnima of Shravan month.

It is believed that Goddess Gayatri’s manifestation took place on this very day. She is considered the Goddess of all the four Vedas (Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda). Hence, she is also known as Ved Mata (mother of Vedas). During Gayatri Jayanti, Goddess Gayatri is worshipped by following various rites and rituals. Additionally, Gayatri Mantra, and Gayatri Chalisa are chanted and Gayatri Aarti is sung on this day to attain the blessings of the Goddess herself.

Religious Significance of Gayatri Jayanti

It is believed that the essence of Hindu culture and religion originates from Goddess Gayatri only. The Shastras state that all the four Vedas and holy shrines came into existence because of her. Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva worship her, which is why she is also known as Dev Mata. Goddess Parvati, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Laxmi are her incarnation.

Holy Union of Lord Brahma and Goddess Gayatri

Goddess Gayatri is also the better half of Lord Brahma. It is mentioned in an epic tale that once Lord Brahma had to take part in a Yajna (Yagya), but his wife Goddess Savitri was not present there. As the attendance of both the husband and wife in a Yagya is considered auspicious, thus Lord Brahma got married to Goddess Gayatri so as to participate in the Yagya.

Rites and Rituals to Follow on Gayatri Jayanti

Wake up early in the morning and take a bath in the Ganga, the holy river.
Observe an oath to fast on this day.
Venerate Goddess Gayatri on this day.
Chant Gayatri Chalisa.
Chant Gayatri Mantra and conduct an obsolation (hawan).
Also, chant Shri Aditya Hriday Strotam.
At the end, sing the Gayatri aarti.
It is considered auspicious to donate grains, jaggery and wheat on this day.
Donate food items or sweet beverages on this day.

Nirjala Ekadashi Festival on the Same Day

Coincidentally, Nirjala Ekadashi will also be observed on the same day. This festival also has great eminence in Hinduism as Lord Vishnu is worshipped during this festival. The fast of Ekadashi is kept by the devotees and the consumption of water is also almost avoided on this day. Various myths suggest that the first NIrjala Ekadashi fast was observed by a person named Bhimsen, which is why this festival is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi.

Conventional wisdom asserts that the observation of this fast with a pure heart and full dedication will procure the same amount of results which are gained after successfully observing all the Ekadashi fasts. One who keeps the Nirjala Ekadashi Fast is blessed with longevity and salvation. During this Ekadashi too, natives should observe fasts and make donations.

jānata tumahiṃ tumahiṃ hvai jāī। pārasa parasi kudhātu suhāī॥20॥

tumharī śakti dipai saba ṭhāī। mātā tuma saba ṭhaura samāī॥21॥

graha nakṣatra brahmāṇḍa ghanere। saba gativāna tumhāre prere॥22॥

सन्तति हीन सुसन्तति पावें। सुख संपति युत मोद मनावें॥२९॥

भूत पिशाच सबै भय खावें। यम के दूत निकट नहिं आवें॥३०॥

जो सधवा सुमिरें चित लाई। अछत सुहाग सदा सुखदाई॥३१॥

घर वर सुख प्रद लहैं कुमारी। विधवा रहें सत्य व्रत धारी॥३२॥

Ganga Dussehra: Bathing In The Ganga Will Cleanse These Sins!

As per the mythological beliefs, Goddess Ganga got pleased with the intense penance of King Bhagirath and decided to grace this mortal world with her presence. The day she got incarnated was the tenth day (dashami) of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha. In order to celebrate her descent into this world, we celebrate this day as Ganga Dussehra every year. It is also believed that worshipping the Goddess on this day, and chanting the Ganga Stotra while standing in the river, washes away all sins of an individual.

When Is Ganga Dussehra Celebrated?

As discussed earlier, the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of the Jyeshtha month, as per the Hindu Panchang, is commemorated as Ganga Dussehra every year. The Skanda Purana states that along with bathing in the pious river (ganga snan), charity and meditation should also be done on this day. Doing good deeds today helps one cleanse all their sins.

Significance Of Ganga Dussehra

Hindus have called the Ganga, ‘Maa’, i.e., mother for centuries. Even today, every person has reverence for Maa Ganga, and devotees from every corner of India reach religious places like Haridwar, Banaras, Rishikesh, etc., on this occasion for Ganga Darshan. Moreover, it is believed that bathing in the pious river (Ganga snan) eradicates ten types of sins of a person. These include: four vocal, three corporeal, and three mental sins. Anyone who wishes to get rid of the same should do Ganga Snan on the day of Ganga Dussehra.

Celebration of the festival of Ganga Dussehra is very significant for the devotees of Hindu religion. On this day, they worship Goddess Bhagirathi, and take dips in the holy river to cleanse their sins. Charity and donations are of great importance on this day too. Throngs of people are gathered at the banks of the holy Ganga. However, the Ganga Dussehra of Varanasi is given a higher preference because there, it is celebrated in a spectacular way. After the Ganga snan, one should do the Ganga aarti.

Puja Vidhi And Charity On Ganga Dussehra

On this day, one takes a bath in the Ganga river.
Those devotees who are unable to visit the banks of the Ganga should take a bath in a nearby pond, lake, or river while ruminating (meditating) about the goddess.
Taking ten dips in Ganga or any river is considered auspicious.
Afterwards, one should worship the Goddess, following the rituals properly according to Shodashopchar.
Chant the following mantra during the veneration:

ऊँ नम: शिवायै नारायण्यै दशहरायै गंगायै नम: ।।

ūm̐ nama: śivāyai nārāyaṇyai daśaharāyai gaṃgāyai nama: ।।

Thereafter, recite this mantra while offering five flowers to Goddess Ganga:

ऊँ नमो भगवते ऐं ह्रीं श्रीं हिलि हिलि मिलि मिलि गंगे मां पावय पावय स्वाहा।।

ūm̐ namo bhagavate aiṃ hrīṃ śrīṃ hili hili mili mili gaṃge māṃ pāvaya pāvaya svāhā।।

It is said that King Bhagirath chanted this mantra while requesting Maa Ganga to take incarnation on Earth. Therefore, it is also known as the Name Mantra of Bhagirath.
In addition to all this, all things present in the puja ingredients for worshipping Goddess Jahnvi should be ten in count, like ten types of flowers, ten naivedya, ten betel leaves, and ten types of fruits.
Any devotee who wishes to make a donation or do charity should also do that of ten objects.
If you are donating sesame and barley, then that should not be less than 16 fistfuls.
Devotees who wish to make donations to Brahmins should remember that the number ten will be auspicious here as well.
