Pitru Paksha Begins Tomorrow, Know Shradh Dates

Read importance of Pind Daan and Puja vidhi. Pitru Paksha are beginning from 24 September. Find out the rituals followed to provide salvation to ancestors.

In Hinduism, parents and ancestors are regarded as deities, and they are worshipped on an equivalent level. Shradh refers to the reverence expressed towards the ancestors. In scriptures, Pitru Paksha holds great importance for devoting peace and moksha to the soul of ancestors and forefathers. Although, Tarpan is done on Amavasya of every month, but the duration of Pitru Paksha is entirely devoted towards these rituals.

The sixteen days period starting from Purnima of Bhadrapada and ending on Amavasya of Ashwin Krishna Paksha, is called Pitru Paksha. In this period, we give donations, perform charity, havana and worship God, so that the souls of their forefathers and ancestors rest in peace.

Please note: This year, Pitru Paksha will begin from 24 September and end on 8 October 2018. It is believed that one should worship their ancestors wholeheartedly during these 16 days. By doing this, the ancestors attain peace and salvation and bless the native with a long and flourishing life.

Importance of Pind Daan and Puja Vidhi

According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, a grandson or nephew seems eligible to perform the rituals of Pind Daan, in case the departed have no son.

• Pind Daan, Tarpan, and Brahman Bhoj holds immense importance in this ritual. Pind Daan is highly significant to carry out, as without performing it, souls of the ancestors cannot attain moksha or salvation. To commence, take a bath early, wear the sacred thread or Janeu on the right shoulder and offer Pind prepared with cow’s milk, honey, sugar and rice to your ancestors.
• Offer a mixture of water, barley, black sesame seeds and Kusha to your ancestors. It is believed that by offering this, the thirst of forefathers and ancestors gets quenched.
• Ideally, this ritual must be performed at Prayag or Gaya. In case it is not possible, you can perform it at your home.
• It is also believed that your ancestors can knock on your door in any form during this period. Hence, do not turn away anyone from your home.
• Follow the code of Brahmacharya during the period of Pitru Paksha and avoid consuming meat or alcohol.

Importance of 10 Kinds of Donations on Pitru Paksha

By doing 10 types of donations during Pitru Paksha, the ancestors gains absolute peace. One should donate cow, land, clothes, black sesame seeds, gold, ghee or clarified butter, jaggery, rice, silver and salt, etc. In addition, mute animals should also be fed during this period.

When and How to Do Shradh

According to the traditions and puja vidhi, Shradh of the departed kin should be done on the date of his death. If a person dies on Saptami, his Shradh must be done on the same day. In addition, there are some special beliefs which are as follows:

• Shradh of father is carried out on the eighth day (Ashtami), and shradh of mother is done on the ninth day (Navami).
• Shradh of a family member who met with an untimely death due to an accident or suicide must be done on the fourteenth day or Chaturdashi.
• Shradh of saints and monks must be done on Twelfth day or Dwadashi.
• In case you don’t remember the date of death of any departed ancestor, their shradh must be done on Amavasya. This day is known as Sarva Pitra Shradh.

This year, it will be celebrated tomorrow on Sunday, September 23. On this auspicious day, Anant Roop of Lord Vishnu is venerated. The idol of Lord Ganesha (established during Ganesh Chaturthi) is also immersed in water, i.e. 10 days later on the day of Chaturdashi. (Please not that Ganesh Sthapana is also done for 3, 5 or 7 days.) This festival of Anant Chaturdashi is celebrated with lots of enthusiasm in Central and North India.

Importance of Anant Chaturdashi

In Hinduism, fasts and festivals are of great importance and celebrated every year. Among them, Anant Chaturdashi is a significant festival. On this occasion, Anant Roop of Lord Vishnu is worshipped. This Puja takes place in the noon time. In early morning, a vow is taken for the fast and urn installation is also done. (Kalash Sthapana). The significance of this fast and Puja are mentioned in Agni Purana. At the same time, binding of Anant Sutra after worshipping the God is of similar importance on this occasion. This Sutra is made from cotton or silk thread, and is tied on the hand after Puja. As per beliefs, Lord Anant protects people and provides them with worldly splendour, after binding Anant Sutra. Sacred fast is also performed for getting blessed with a child and for prosperity on this day. People also listen to the religious tales of Lord Vishnu.

Religious Story of Anant Chaturdashi

It is believed that the fast and festival of Anant Chaturdashi began in Mahabharata Era. When Pandavas got defeated and were living in the woods, at that time, Lord Krishna had described them about the importance of Anant Chaturdashi Vrat. It is said that in beginning of creation, Lord Vishnu took 14 incarnations (Roop) to protect and preserve 14 worlds (Loka). As a result, the God appeared infinite. That is why, fast on Anant Chaturdashi is taken to appease Lord Vishnu and seek his divine blessings. The fast is also considered to give infinite (Anant) blissful results.

Ganesh Chaturthi Vrat Rituals

• After bathing in the morning, take Copper or clay - made idol of Ganesh ji and worship the Siddhivinayak Roop (form) of the God.
• Fill a vessel with water and bind its mouth with a new cloth. Then, place Ganpati above it.
• Offer Vermilion, Durva (grass) and 21 Laddoos as Bhoga to the God. Then, share this Prasad of Laddoos among poor or Brahmins.

Remedies to Appease Lord Ganesha as per Zodiac Sign

Aries and Scorpio

Natives of these two signs should establish Vermillion (Sindoori) colored Ganesh Murti (idol) in their homes and adorn his idol with Red and Vermillion clothes. Also offer red roses, and Boondi Laddoos and Pomegranate as Prasad to Lord Ganesha.

Remedy: Chant “ऊँ Gan Ganpataye Namah” daily while offering 11 Durva grass to Ganpati ji.

Taurus and Libra

Dress up the idol of Lord Ganesha in white clothes and offer Modak as Bhoga.

Remedy: Recite Ganesh Chalisa and offer white flowers and Ittar (perfume) to the God.

Gemini and Virgo

Natives of these signs should adorn Ganesh Murti with green clothes. Offer Paan, green Cardamom, Durva grass, green Moong Dal and dry Meva.

Remedy: Reciting Ganesh Atharvashirsha is highly beneficial.

Cancer

Natives should vesture Ganpati Murti in pink clothes. Offer rice pudding as Bhoga and rose flowers to the God.

Why Chandra Darshan is prohibited during Ganesh Chaturthi?

It is believed that a person should not see Moon during Ganesh Chaturthi. The reason being that Chandra Darshan may cause Mithya Kalank to a person, i.e. she/he may charged with false allegations without any reason. As per religious texts, Lord Krishna also became the victim of falsehood (Mithya) due to Chandra Darshan. But what is the reason behind this belief?

On the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, there is an ancient story about Chandra Darshan. According to this myth, Lord Ganesha cursed Chandra on the day of Chaturthi, and this is the reason why seeing Moon on this day is prohibited. If anyone sees Moon by mistake, then there is a description of Chandra Darshan Dosh Nivaran Mantra in Vedic scriptures. One can chant this Mantra 28, 54 or 108 times to avoid the harmful effects of Chandra Darshan. Additionally, reading the 57th chapter of 10th part (Skanda) of Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta also results in eliminating Chandra Darshan Dosha.

Sukumarak Ma Rodistava, Hrosh Isyamantakah।।
