Varalakshmi Vratham is celebrated in the Shravana month on the day before full moon day, i.e. Purnima. Varalakshmi is considered as the another form (Avatar) of Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. Being the festival of womanhood, Varalakshmi Vratam is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm by the married ladies. Varalakshmi Vratham is considered as the festival of boons (Vara) in the Hindu mythology. With the observance of this sacred Vrat, one can get all his desires and wishes fulfilled.
This pious festival is celebrated mainly in the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Varalakshmi Vratham is kept by the married women for well being and long life of their husband. Also, this Vrat is believed to bless the couple with the pleasure of having a child. Observing Varalakshmi Vratham is equal to worshiping Ashta Lakshmi, the goddess of below mentioned eight forces:

Varalakshmi Vratham: Essentials Of Varalakshmi Vrat Puja
Varalakshmi Vratham is a festival of boons. On this auspicious day, women wake up early and take bath. They adorn themselves beautifully in new clothes and traditional jewellery. In order to decorate the home, colorful and beautiful Rangolis are made.
After decorating the house, idol of Goddess Lakshmi is decorated with new clothes, jewellery, and Kumkum (vermilion). The essentials items required for performing Varalakshmi Puja are as mentioned below:
- Turmeric (Haldi)
- Kumkum (Vermilion)
- Sandalwood paste (Chandan)
- Flowers
- Fruits
- One red cloth
- Betel leaves and nuts (Paan Ke Patte)
- Coconuts
- Rice
- Chana (black chickpeas)
Varalakshmi Vratham: Puja Vidhi
The Puja starts with Ganesha meditation and then below mentioned steps are performed:
- Place idol of Goddess Lakshmi on the Puja Sthan (place of worship) facing east direction
- Spread some rice on the Puja Sthan
- Take a Kalash (earthen pot) and apply Chandan on its four sides
- Fill more than half of the Kalash with rice
- Put betel nuts, betel leaves, dry date fruit and a coin (silver or copper) inside the Kalash
- Apply Chandan, turmeric and Kumkum on a coconut and place that coconut on top of the Kalash
- Place mango leaves around the coconut
- Keep a new red cloth in plate and put it over the rice on floor
- Light a lamp (diya) in front of Goddess Lakshmi
