Kojagiri Puja Story

To understand what exactly Kojagiri Puja is, let’s read the following story.

Once upon a time, there ruled a noble king in the state of Bengal who promised his artisans that if any of object made by them remains unsold, he would buy them. Once it happened and an idol of Goddess Alakshmi (Goddess of Poverty) made by one of his artisans remained unsold and as per the promise made, the king bought it and placed it in his temple. As a result, wealth and prosperity left the kingdom of the king as Goddess Lakshmi and Alakshmi cannot reside together. The king was surprised and went to Lord Dharma for help. Lord Dharma suggested him that his wife (queen) should perform the Kojagiri Lakshmi Vrat on the full Moon night of the Ashwin month. The queen observed the fast and performed the rituals due to which the idol of Goddess Alakshmi melted away and Goddess of prosperity, Goddess Lakshmi remained back in the kingdom.

Rituals Performed On Kojagiri Puja

People keep fast for the whole day and perform Puja at night with minimum of 108 lamps or diyas, agarbatti and flowers. Kheer is prepared as bhog to please Goddess Lakshmi and is kept under the moonlight the whole night and is taken as Prasad by all on the next day.

• Kojagiri Puja is always performed at night because the queen who began this Puja stayed awake all night to please Goddess Lakshmi.
• Feet of Goddess Lakshmi showing entry inside the house are drawn with a paste of powdered rice. The feet symbolizes that Goddess Lakshmi should come into the house and should never leave it.
• Fruits, grains, clothes, rice and gold are offered to the Goddess. Some Bengali families offer fish to the Goddess as they believe it to be sacred.
• Kojagiri Puja is done with a belief of eliminating poverty and gaining prosperity.

Kaveri Sankramana celebration in Karnataka

In Karnataka this day is celebrated as Kaveri Sankramana in the month of mid- October. The name Kaveri signifies the river Kaveri which flows through the district, beginning from its source at Talakaveri. On this day when Sun enters into Tula Rashi, a fountain (from a small tank) fills the larger holy tank (at Talakaveri) and thousands of devotees gather there to dip in this holy water, also known as ‘tirtha’. The tirtha or the holy water is collected in bottles and is preserved by every home throughout Kodagu. It is believed that a dying person attains moksha and receives heaven if, given a spoonful of this holy water at the time of death.

Married woman wear silk saris and perform puja to a vegetable (usually, coconut or cucumber wrapped in red silk cloth and decorated with jewels and flowers) which symbolizes Goddess Kaveri. The jewel used is mainly ‘Pathak’ also known as Kodava Mangalsutra and this puja is known as Kanni Puje. Areca nut and three sets of betel leaves are placed before the idol of Goddess Kaveri along with glass bangles. Members of the family pray to the Goddess while throwing rice and bowing themselves in front of the idol. Younger members of the family are blessed by the elder members and an elder married woman takes out water from the well to cook food. Food cooked on this day is dosa and vegetable curry and payasam (sweet dish). Only vegetarian food is cooked this day.

Chaughadiya Muhurat Demystified

Chaughadiya is effective but easy to calculate and it is the beauty of Chaughadiya Muhurat.

What Is Chaughadia?

‘Choghadia’ is a Sanskrit term comprising 2 Sanskrit words in it - ‘Cho’ + ‘Ghadia’. ‘Cho’ means 4 and ‘Ghadia’ means a moment. Ghadia is mainly known as Ghati. Therefore, Chaughadia means 4 Ghati. The ancient Indian system of time is different from the present international system. It is consisted of Ghati instead of hours. If we compare both the systems, 60 Ghatis are equivalent to 24 hours. Second difference is that the modern system starts a day at 12am and closes at the next 12am; whereas, the ancient Indian system starts a day from the sunrise and closes it with the next day’s sunrise. Now, let’s go in detail.

Basically, each Chaughadiya is consisted of 3.75 Ghati, which is approximately 4 Ghati. Hence, if we calculate the total Chaughadiya in a day, they are 16 in number.

Classification Of Chaughadiya

There are total seven chaughadiya as follows -:

Each of these 7 Choghadias has special significance. Some are auspicious, some are just neutral and some are inauspicious. Hence, it is very simple to understand the person has to find the auspicious one for his/her benefit. Let’s now see the classification of auspicious, neutral and inauspicious below:

1. Auspicious - Amrut, Shoobh & Labh

2. Neutral - Chal

3. Inauspicious - Udveg, Kaal & Rog

Hence, important initiatives should be taken during Amrut, Shoobh or Labh Chaughadia; and avoid important initiatives during Udveg, Kaal or Rog Chaughadia. 

Hindu day starts with sunrise and ends with the sunrise next day. There are total eight chaughadiyas during day (sunrise to sunset) and again eight chaughadiyas during night (from sunset to sunrise). Chaughadia falling in day part are generally referred as day Choghadia and Chaudhadiya falling between sunet to sunrise is referred as night chaughadiya.
