Lord Hanuman: The Mighty Vanara
Lord Hanuman is one of the most popular deities among Hindus. He is known for his mighty strength, his undying devotion to Lord Rama and his supreme power. He is also believed to be an avatar of Lord Shiva. Every year Hanuman Jayanti, the birthday of Lord Hanuman is celebrated on the Shukla Pratipada of Chaitra month. Lord Hanuman is the son of Anjani (an Apsara transformed into a monkey because of a curse) and Kesari. Hence, we also know Lord Hanuman as “Kesari Nandan” and “Anjani Putra”. According to Hindu mythology, Hanuman is also the divine son of Vayu, the wind God; hence the name “Pawan Putra” is given to him. It is believed that Hanuman got the power to fly from Vayu. Lord Hanuman is known for his courage, strength and power. He is the symbol of being loyal, this quality being clearly depicted in Ramayana, where he is the loyal devotee of Lord Rama. Lord Hanuman’s popular names are Bajarangbali, Anjaneya, Chiranjeevi, Bhaktavatsala and many more.
Lord Hanuman was mischievous child, his hunger was larger than a mountain. Once when Anjani could not satisfy his hunger, he leaped for the Sun mistaking it for a fruit. He then was punished by Lord Indra with his thunderbolt, who struck him in the face, injuring his chin and left Hanuman hurling him back to Earth. Vayu Deva noticed this and was enraged by Indra’s act, he carried little Hanuman to the netherworld “Patal Lok”; thus leaving Earth panting for breath. Indra, then knowing the danger that befalls Earth without Vayu, apologised to him, blessed Hanuman with mighty powers and restored his broken chin. This is the story of how Hanuman got the name. Hanuman is a Sanskrit term consisting of 2 words - Hanu + Man. Hanu means ‘chin’ and Man means ‘to have’. Hence, Hanuman means, the one who has chin, as he got a new chin from Lord Indra.
Lord Hanuman is known to be a Brahmachari (celibate), but there is also a story which says, Hanuman was married. Legends say that, Hanuman wanted to learn scriptures from Surya Deva (Sun God), but was rejected because those could be taught only to a married man. As such, a maiden was created out of the rays of Surya Deva who was known as Suvarchala. Hanuman was then married to Suvarchala, but still remained a Brahmachari as he did not have any kind of marital relationship with her.

Rishi Panchami: The Day Of Purification
Rishi Panchami (aka Rushi Panchami) comes on the 5th day of the bright half of the Hindu lunar month Bhadrapada; that is, two days after Hartalika Teej and one day after Ganesh Chaturthi. If we look at it from Gregorian calendar, the festival falls in the month of August or September usually. This time, Rishi Panchami will be celebrated on the 10th of September, 2013.
As Hindu calendar is always stuffed with many important days, we consider each one of them as festival. However, some events can’t be considered as festival. One of them is Rishi Panchami.
Rishi Panchami is not actually a festival. It is an auspicious day, which offers the chance for women to purify their bodies and get rid of Rajaswala Dosha. Not only this, the day is also auspicious to get rid of all the sins one has made in the past.
What Is Rajaswala Dosha?
In Hinduism, a woman going through the menstruation time is considered unclean. During that period of time, the woman isn’t allowed to enter the kitchen or the place of worship. Also, she is asked to stay in isolation away from everyone for that time.
Rishi Panchami Vs Rajaswala Dosha
On the day of Rishi Panchami, women worship the 7 sages (Sapt Rishi) to get rid of all the Doshas, especially Rajaswala Dosha. Hinduism prioritizes purity, be it physical or spiritual; and the day of Rishi Panchami offers the chance to get rid of all the impurities.
Rishi Panchami In Nepal
The observance of Rishi Panchami is seen mostly amongst the Nepali Hindus. They follow the proper procedure of worship and considers the day of Rishi Panchami very significant. In some area, the 3 days fast of Hartalika Teej ends on Rishi Panchami.
Rishi Panchami & Other Beliefs
The idea of observing fast on the day of Rishi Panchami is not only confined to Rajaswala Dosha. The belief may vary from region to region. As the day is dedicated to the commemoration of 7 great sages, one may pay the gratitude toward the great saints. Everybody can perform this fast, be them males or females. Just the belief and aim of observing the fast may differ from person to person.
Sapt Rishi & 4 Vedas
The names of the Sapt Rishis (7 sages) are as follows:
- Rishi Kashyap
- Rishi Atri
- Rishi Bhardwaj
- Rishi Vishwamitra
- Rishi Gautam
- Rishi Janadagni
- Rishi Vashishtha
Hinduism follows the principles of Vedas. There are 4 Vedas, namely:
- Rig Veda
- Yajur Veda
- Sam Veda
- Atharva Veda
Sapt Rishi contributed in the writing work of Vedas. As their thoughts are being followed by each Hindu, this day is dedicated to honor the first Gurus.
As a child, your parents must have told you about that constellation consisted of 7 stars, which is known as Sapt Rishi. It is near the North Pole. The constellation has been given the names of Sapt Rishi so that their names become immortal.
The Dying Day
Rishi Panchami is extincting with time, as nobody is bothered about this day and hardly few of us know about it. Earlier, women used to observe fast on this day considering it very auspicious. Let’s see how this day is celebrated…
Rishi Panchami Celebration
As the day is mainly believed to be for women, the celebration process may also favor them. However, men may extract the processes to become the part of this auspicious day.
First of all, women observe fast on this day. In afternoon, they visit a nearby water body, be it river or a pond; bring cow dung with them; clean their teeth with medicinal herbal wood stick (Agadha sticks); take bath in the water.
Now, Sapt Rishi should be established on a wooden Bajot in the form of 7 betel nuts and then worshipped. During the fast of Rishi Panchami, women can consume the eatable roots (Kand Mool); for example, potatoes and sweet potatoes; and the eatables grown from the grains being toiled by bullocks should not be consumed.
Even Jains consider it a very auspicious day. They have their own reason and way of observation. However, the basic motive between Hindus and Jains remains the same for this festival.
Rishi Panchami is a very significant day, which is getting extinct with time. It needs revival and only you can do that. Become the part of it and let others join you too.
With this, we hope you fetch the blessings of Sapt Rishi and your ancestors to lead a blissful life. May you get freed from all the past sins and impurities this Rishi Panchami.

4 Ways Vedic Astrology Makes You Happier
Vedic Astrology is almost as old as history itself. It is considered a Vedanga – a limb of Vedas. Studying astrology is a must to understand Vedas and the spiritual truths these sacred scriptures contain. Astrology, in several ways, can make you happier and enrich your life. If we understand astrology in its core, we can get immense benefits out of it. In this article, we are discussing four main points showing how astrology can improve you physically, mentally and spiritually, and make you happier.
#1: Vedic Astrology Gives You Hope
The basis of Vedic Astrology is the “Law of Karma”. “Law of Karma” says whatever happens to you is due to your past deeds. Your birth-chart or Kundli (Click here to make your Kundli) represents your past Karmas. You are now reaping what you sowed. There is no escape from it. But Vedic Astrology emphasizes that you that you can also create your own future. As your past deeds have created your present, what you do now will create your future. You are the maker of your future. According to astrology, you sculpt your own destiny. Vedic Astrology gives you hope that you can improve your career, overcome delay in marriage, become successful and get happiness.
#2: Vedic Astrology Makes You Withstand Hardship
When you know that there is a solution of your problems – a remedy to eradicate your troubles, you keep on fighting and do not give-up. Vedic Astrology peps you up and makes you happier. Astrological remedies can help you great deal in all sort of troubles. Obviously, there is no magic wand and troubles cannot end like drop of a heat. But, there is always something that you can do. This faith keeps you going and makes you stronger. It gives a die-hard attitude and determination to overcome all the problems.
Do you know the remedies to eliminate your problem? Check out: Remedies & Gemstones.
#3: Vedic Astrology Helps You Become Selfless
As circumstances are written in your chart – both positive and negative – you face what comes to you. Therefore, Vedic Astrology insists you're not a doer. You are just a witness, a part of all pervasive consciousness that witnesses cosmic play all the time. You are just a medium and do what God or cosmos wants you to do. In Gita, Krshna asks Arjuna to surrender to God and perform actions selflessly. Astrology provides a practical tool or it. It shows that the flow of events is incessant and cannot be controlled by you. You must be like a medium performing all sorts of actions without any attachment. It destroys ego and self-centeredness of mind. So, whatever you do knowing this purifies your heart, makes you selfless and brings you closer to divinity within. Selflessness is the key to true happiness.
#4: Vedic Astrology Shows You Are the Universe
Astrology teaches the principles of Vedanta. Your chart isn’t just your chart, not only an individual’s chart. Your chart also tells about your father, your mother, your siblings, your spouse, your neighbours and much more. Your chart is a cosmic chart encompassing entire universe. It teaches that you aren’t just an individual as you believe now – you are the entire universe. Your body is the point of manifestation of this universal consciousness. Believing that one is just a separate being different from others is mere illusion. Astrology, like Jnana Yoga, is a way to realize ultimate reality. When one realizes that one has everything and lacks nothing, one reaches to ultimate happiness, the ultimate bliss.

- How ganesha got his head?
- Who is Elder ?
How ganesha got his head?
This is a question many would want the answer for, well we will tell you how. Legend say that Goddess Parvati while bathing rubbed off the turmeric from her body and made a life like idol of a small boy and breathed life into it, claiming him to be her son. She then asked him to guard the house and not let anyone in until she was done with her bath. But just then Lord Shiva happen to come there and sees this boy blocking him from entering the house. Enraged by this behaviour of the boy (Lord Ganesh) he cuts off his head. On knowing this Goddess Parvati threatens to destroy the earth and heavens, so great was her anger. Goddess Parvati demanded only if Ganesh was brought back to life and also from then on worshipped as the first God would she spare everyone. Realising his mistake, Lord Shiva orders Narada to go to earth and bring the head of the first being whose head is facing the north, which is considered to the auspicious direction. He brings back the head of the mighty elephant, Lord Ganesh is brought back to life with a head of a elephant and thus peace prevailed in the seven heavens. This is how Lord Ganesh got the elephant head.
Who Is Elder ?
Legends says that, Lord Ganesh and Lord Subramanya had an argument as to who was the elder among the two. When none of the Gods could come up with a solution, the matter was taken to Lord Shiva for a final decision. Lord Shiva proposed a competition that whoever circles the universe the first and comes back to them would be declared as the elder one. Hearing this, Murugan set at once to complete the task in his vahana (the peacock). On the other hand, Lord Ganesh being the wise one went around Lord Shiva and Parvati claiming that, his parents meant the world to him. This act of his won him the heart of the Divine couple as well as the title of being the elder one.
