Kalratri also known as Kali Maa is a dark night for the devils. With a dark complexion, open red tongue, tangled hair and courageous posture, she originates dreadful and bright flames from her mouth. Her three eyes shine intensely and has a lightning necklace around her neck. Devi Kalratri has four hands, left upper is for holding thorn like weapon and lower left hand is for holding a dragger. A sparkling sword is present in her upper right hand while lower right hand is to ease the fears. Upper right hand represents Var Mudra and lower right hand represents Abhay Mudra. Maa Kalratri sits on a donkey.
According to the Legend, there was a demon named “Raktabeej” who had the power of multiplying his Avatar (physical form) from every drop of his blood that fell on the ground. Whole universe was terrified from his extreme brutalities but no one was able to kill him. It was during this time when Goddess Kalratri in the form of “Shubhankari” killed the demon by licking his blood before it fell on the ground. In this way she conquered Raktabeej and freed the world from his torture.
Rituals done on 7th day of Navratri are similar to other nine days of Navratri. The Kalash is worshiped with the family members of the Devi and all the planets. Kalratri Maa is worshipped after them and in the end Lord Shiva and Brahma are worshipped.
Special rituals and offerings are performed in honor of the goddess at midnight of the 7th day. This is the night when Yogis and Sadhaks enter Sashastra Chakra and practice penance. They offer alcohol to Maa Kalratri and indulge themselves in Tantrik rituals and therefore, this night is known as the “Night of Siddhis”.
To please the Devi and seek her blessings, offer Jaggery to her.
Maa kalratri has many names and is called by her different names by different devotees. The many names of the Goddess are- Shubhankari as she blesses her devotees with good fortune, Mahamaya, Trishna, Mahakali and Trisha.
