Sawan Somvar Vrat
According to the Hindu Panchang, the Shravan month is the 5th month of the year starting with the month of Chaitra. So, according to the English Calendar the Shravan month falls in July or August. The month of Shravan coincides with the onset of monsoon and the veneration of Lord Shiva is of utmost importance in this month of Sawan.

Vrat and Puja Vidhi
Reverencing and venerating Lord Shiva is highly significant in the Shravan month. Each Somvar (Monday) in the month of Sawan is dedicated to Lord Shiva and highly propitious results can be obtained by worshiping Lord Shiva. The devotees observe fast to please Lord Shiva in order to get rid of all the adversities of life. Let us know the Puja Vidhi of worshipping Lord Shiva:
- Wake up early in the morning and perform the rituals of bathing, wearing clean clothes, etc.
- After that, perform abhishekam of Lord Shiva with water and milk.
- Apply sandalwood mark (tilak) and offer bel patra, dhatura, fruits, flowers, etc.
- Light a pure ghee lamp
- After performing the Sawan Somvar Vrat Katha, recite the Shiv Chalisa followed by Mangal Aarti.
- On the day of vrat, worship Lord Shiva in the morning and evening.
- After the completion of Puja, conclude your vrat and then consume food.

Why Shravan month is dear to Lord Shiva?
Observing Somvar Vrat in the month of Sawan is of utmost importance to please Lord Shiva. According to the scriptures, Goddess Parvati observed a fast and performed austerity in order to have Lord Shiva as her husband. After witnessing this severe penance, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati.
According to another scripture, it is believed that in this month, Lord Shiva visited his in-laws in human form. After visiting there, abhishekam was performed with water. It is also believed that every year in the month of Sawan, Lord Shiva visits his in-laws and it is the most auspicious occasion for the people on earth to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.
