Third day or Tritiya that falls in Shukla Paksha of Vaishakha month is known as Akshaya Tritiya. This festival is also known by the name of Akha Teej or Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya. It holds great religious significance in Hinduism. It is believed that the beginning of Satyug and Treta Yuga took place from this Tithi onwards. On the same day, birth anniversary of Lord Parshuram, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is celebrated as Parshuram Jayanti. Significance of Akshaya Tritiya
Akshaya Tritiya is highly propitious festival which is widely celebrated by Hindu and Jain people. Bathing in Ganga river, donating things, performing Yagna, etc on this auspicious day results in sacred rewards as well as eliminates all sins. If this day falls on Monday and in Rohini Nakshatra, then it reaps highly great fruits.
This Tritiya is also known as Sarva Siddhi Muhurat. It is the day when auspicious activities like marriage, Grah Pravesh, etc. can be commenced without looking at Panchang. It is also an auspicious Muhurat for beginning a new task, business, or anything, buying new things especially gold, etc. According to Puranas, Pind Daan offered to ancestors on this day is highly propitious.
Religious Activities to do on Akshaya Tritiya
- Donate things like watch, urn (Kalash), fan, umbrella, rice, pulses, Salt, Ghee, Sugar, Tamarind, fruits, clothes, Khadau (Chappal), Sattu, Cucumber (Kakdi), musk melon and money to the needy or Brahmins.
- On this day, one should buy things like gold, silver, clay pots (Mitti ke Bartan), clothes, Shankh, Sugar, Turmeric (Haldi), Peacock feathers, etc for good fortune.
- Cow represents good health and wealth. So, on this auspicious day, one should worship this sacred being with utmost devotion.
- People pay reverence to Goddess Mahalakshmi who is considered as the bestower of wealth and prosperity.
- Doors to God Badrinarayana opens on this day, so one should offer Tulsidal (multiple tulsi leaves tied together) in water and worship the God will utmost and pure devotion.
Why is Akshaya Tritiya celebrated?
There are many stories mentioned in religious scriptures about why Akshaya Tritiya is of great significance.
Lord Parshuram was born on Akshaya Tritiya, therefore, the day is celebrated as Parshuram Jayanti. He is believed to be the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Initially named as Ramabhadra, he was given the holy responsibility of releasing Mothers and Goddesses from demons. For this task, he was given a weapon called Parashu by Lord Shiva himself, thus earning the name Parshuram.
The holy day of Akshaya Tritiya has a sacred connection with Mahabharata as well. It is believed that Satyug (the Golden Age), commenced from this day onwards. Also, the greatest Acharya of Sanatan Dharma started writing the epic Mahabharata on this auspicious day. It is also believed that Sun God gifted the Akshaya Patra (an enchanted pot which had a never ending supply of food) to the Pandavas on the same day of Akshaya Tritiya.
Astrological significance of Akshaya Tritiya
According to Vedic Astrology, there are three and a half Akshaya Tithis in a year. Among them, Akshaya Tritiya is considered to be the best and supreme Tithi and it occurs in Vaishakha month. It is also believed that the luminaries, Sun and Moon, are at their extreme brightness on this day, which signifies a highly favourable period for performing auspicious activities.
