It is believed that on this day, the demon king Hiranyakashyap’s sister Holika  was annihilated to ashes in fire while the fire proved to be harmless for Bhakt Prahlad, who is considered to the symbol of goodness. Since then, the legend is celebrated in the form of Holika Dahan on the day of Phalguna Purnima during Bhadrarahita timing of Pradosha Kaal.

During Holika Dahan, it is recommended to bake the coverings of wheat and other crops. It is said that if we spread sand in the house by heating it, prosperity and wealth gets an increment.

The festival of Holi is celebrated in the month of Phalguna on Purnima or full moon day. This year Holika Dahan will take place on 16 March 2014 and the next day will be succeeded by Holi on 17 March 2014.Holi symbolizes harmony and brotherhood and Holika Dahan serves the purpose of destroying evil and is performed along every streets of the Nation. After the proceeding of Holika Puja gets over, Vrati Bhojana takes place.

Hindu religion depicts an infinite number of traditions and customs. With the advancement of time, mindsets might have changed among the Indians but their traditional roots have remained intact for years. According to Astrology, performing celebrations considering the auspicious timings or Muhurta has been stated to produce desired results. Holi Puja takes place when Nisha Mukha surpasses Bhadra Mukha which has been believed to be effectively auspicious. Ancient texts have mentioned Pradosh Kaal to be the right time to perform Holika Puja. Yet, these days neglect the significance of auspicious timings and perform Holika Puja during the middle hours or late hours of the day.
