HOLIKA DAHAN MUHURTA: CELEBRATING THE DEATH OF EVIL
Holika Dahan or combustion of Holika is performed a day prior to Holi, the most important festival of the Hindus. Holika Dahan symbolizes the destruction of evil and the triumph of goodness on earth. It is believed that on this day, the demon king Hiranyakashyap’s sister Holika was annihilated to ashes in fire while the fire proved to be harmless for Bhakt Prahlad, who is considered to the symbol of goodness. Since then, the legend is celebrated in the form of Holika Dahan on the day of Phalguna Purnima during Bhadrarahita timing of Pradosha Kaal.
After Holi Puja, Holika Dahan or combustion of Holika takes place. Holika Dahan is considerably performed in the absence of Bhadra. It is believed that if performing Holika Dahan takes place during the ascendant of Bhadra, it can lead to negative impacts. It may lead to rebels, tense situations in the country. During Holika Dahan, it is recommended to bake the coverings of wheat and other crops. It is said that if we spread sand in the house by heating it, prosperity and wealth gets an increment.
The festival of Holi is celebrated in the month of Phalguna on Purnima or full moon day. This year Holika Dahan will take place on 16 March 2014 and the next day will be succeeded by Holi on 17 March 2014.Holi symbolizes harmony and brotherhood and Holika Dahan serves the purpose of destroying evil and is performed along every streets of the Nation. Holika idols are prepared along with the agnikund or fireplace with sticks and wood pieces. A tradition of performing Holi Puja before the process of combustion of Holika is a common ritual. After the proceeding of Holika Puja gets over, Vrati Bhojana takes place.
