According to Hindu Panchang, Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in Ashadh month is called Devshayani Ekadashi. It is also known as Ashadhi, Padmanabh and Hari Shayani Ekadashi. As per English Calendar, this Ekadashi usually comes in the month of June or July every year. In this year 2018, Devshayani Ekadashi will be celebrated on 23 July, Monday. 

According to religious beliefs, Lord Vishnu goes into sleep from this day onwards, and after a period of about four months, when Sun enters into Libra, he wakes up. This day is called Devutthana Ekadashi. The period which lasted for 4 months is called Chaturmas in Hinduism. It has been said in Padma Purana that a person who wishes for salvation should perform the vrat of Devshayani and Devutthana Ekadashi.

Chaturmas Begins Tomorrow


Lord Vishnu sleeps on Ekadashi of Ashadh Shukla Paksha and wakes up from his sleep on Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha. This period of four months when Lord Vishnu sleeps is called Chaturmas. It is believed that in this period when God sleeps, many auspicious activities such as marriage, entering a new house (Griha Pravesh) and mundan rites must not be carried out, as one fails to attain God's blessings. At the same time, the effects of Sun and Moon is reduced due to heavy rain and clouds during these months.

Importance of Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat 


Brahma Vaivarta Purana mentions the significance of this Ekadashi. It is said that by performing this vrat, all desires of a native gets fulfilled, alongside all sins being destroyed. With the influence of this fast, a native gets salvation and spiritual freedom. Therefore, worshipping Lord Vishnu holds a special significance on this day.


Do’s & Don’ts During Chaturmas


In Hinduism, there are certain activities apart from auspicious tasks that you must avoid during the period of Chaturmas. Read about them:

  • Do not eat jaggery for good voice and melodious tone.
  • Donate oil to attain longevity for your son and grandson.
  • Consume milk in order to increase your family clan.
  • Sleep on the floor instead on the bed.
  • Do not eat honey, radish, pointed gourd (parwal) and eggplant.
