Raksha Bandhan Muhurat:

  • Raksha Bandhan In 2013 will begin on 20th August 2013 and will last till 21st August 2013
  • Raksha Bandhan Muhurat: The Most Suitable Muhurat is from 08:49 PM on 20th till 7:15 AM on 21st.
  • Ignoring Bhadra: The Muhurat is from 10:22 AM on 20th till 7:15 AM on 21st (Besides, Bhadra is Swarg Lok (Heaven), which implies Bhadra will not be inauspicious this Raksha Bandhan)

The month of Shravan, as we all know, is very Holy. During this pious month, several festivals are celebrated. One of the most important and eagerly awaited festivals of this month is - Raksha Bandhan. Now, I will bring to your notice two very crucial questions that come across everyone's mind and must be answered to make the festival all the more auspicious.

Raksha Bandhan - A Day That Recognises No Barriers

Friends, as we all know Raksha Bandhan is a unique festival. There is no comparison to it. Raksha Bandhan goes beyond caste, creed and religion. It is a festival that symbolizes the unbreakable bond of love that brothers and sisters share. The most beautiful dimension of Raksha Bandhan is that it recognizes no religion or caste and is not bound by any social restriction that divide people. There are innumerable examples of sisters from different castes and religion tying Rakhi to brothers of varied castes and religions. Those brothers have also retaliated the emotion behind the Rakhis and returned their love by vowing to protect them and perform every duty that a brother owes to his sister.

Muhurat of Raksha Bandhan 2013

According to me, there is a special Muhurat (auspicious time) to tie the knot of Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan. Now, you all must be curious to know the Muhurat to tie the Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan 2013. The festival of Raksha Bandhan is on Shravan Purnima. This year, Shravan Purnima will be of 2 days. So, of course, you may wonder what would be the exact day of Raksha Bandhan. This year Shravan Purnima will begin on the 20th of August, 2013 at 10:22 AM on Tuesday. It will remain till 21st August, 2013, at 07:15 AM. But the dilemma here is that Bhadra will also begin on 20th August, 2013 at 10:22 AM. This will stay put till 08:49 PM. People who do not give much significance to Bhadra can tie Rakhi after 10:22 AM. Besides, Bhadra is Swarg Lok (Heaven), which implies Bhadra will not be inauspicious this Raksha Bandhan, as per a belief system.

Since it has been written in the scriptures of Muhurat that Raksha Bandhan must not be celebrated during Bhadra. Keeping this in mind, Raksha Bandhan must be celebrated when we are devoid of Bhadra in the Pradosh Kaal or in other words, we should celebrate Raksha Bandhan anytime after 8:49 PM on 20th August, 2013. After this period we can greet each other and carry on with the festivities of this festival. But there has been an ancient tradition in many states of India, according to which, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated before sunrise on Shravan Purnima's Uday Vyapani. So, sisters must tie the Rakhis on their brothers by 07:15 AM on 21st August, 2013.

In case there is some urgency, then an exception can be made wherein the Muhurat will be: 20th August, from 3: 30 PM till 04:28 PM. During this period, Rakhis can be tied.

To summarize it, I would say that either you should tie the Rakhi after 8:49 PM on 20th August, 2013 or proceed with the ceremony before 07:15 AM on 21st August, 2013. You also have a third option, which would be less appropriate than the others. That is, you may carry out the rituals of Raksha Bandhan on 20th August, 2013 from 03:30 PM till 04:28 PM.

Uniqueness Of Raksha Bandhan 2013

There have been many occasions wherein Raksha Bandhan was celebrated at dusk or in the evening but 2013's Muhurat is of that strange nature that we would have to celebrate it at night. This is the first time that Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated at such an odd time.

Beautiful Evolution Of Raksha Bandhan

By successfully performing the rituals of Raksha Bandhan on the Muhurat, we hope that you stay blessed, protected and happy. There is one more thing that I'd like to bring to your notice, before concluding. History tells us that those sisters had evolved the tradition of Raksha Bandhan, who were not in blood relation with the brothers. Now, brothers were given the responsibility of shielding their sisters. But, there were many girls who did not have brothers. So, a major question emerged in the society concerning their protection. Well, the solution to this was 'self made brothers'. Rakhis hallmarked this relationship. Hence came the festival of Raksha Bandhan. No doubt those women started this festival to protect themselves, but because of their initiation, we have now a beautiful festival to look forward too.

A Raksha Bandhan for your Motherland

In today's time, our mother land is writhing in the fire of corruption and hatred. We must celebrate another Raksha Bandhan and pledge to protect our nation. On behalf of AstroSage team, I wish a happy and prosperous Raksha Bandhan!!!
