Meaning Of Gurpurab
Gurpurab means "Guru's Remembrance Day" and the birth anniversary of a Sikh Guru is recognized as Gurpurab. The birth anniversaries of all the 10 Gurus are celebrated to mark the remembrance of the sacrifices done by the Gurus. Every Guru is remembered with complete honor, pride and tribute. Each of the Gurpurab is celebrated with similar kind of traditions and celebrations. However, the only difference is in the history and hymns of that particular occasion.
Guru Gobind Singh: The 10th Guru
Guru Gobind Singh was born in 1666. He was the son of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. He gave his life to save religious faith and belief. To achieve the goals of equality, justice, protection of human rights and social good.
Guru Gobind Singh, who was the founder of Khalsa Panth and 10th Guru of Sikhs, ascended the seat of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the year 1675 when he was just 9 years. Also known as Dashmesh Pita, he fought against injustice and was the only 'Sarbans Dani’ who sacrificed his father, mother, four sons and himself for the noble cause of religion and justice. To fight the battle of justice and truth, they built an army of saint-soldiers.
Rituals Before Gurpurab
Every morning, before three days of Gurpurab, processions are held through the streets. These processions are called Prabhat Pheris and include singing of the hymns on different tunes. Devotees offer sweets and tea to those who participate in marching in the procession. End of Prabhat Pheri is signaled by the Gurpurab day. The holy book - ‘Guru Granth Sahib’ is read continuously in the Gurdwaras during these three days. It is known as Akhand Path.
Gurpurab Day Celebration
On the occasion of Gurpurab, Gurdwaras all around the country and world wear a festive look. From early morning, devotees gather up in Gurdwaras for performing Shabad Kirtan. On this day, the holy book of Sikhs, ‘Granth Sahib’ is decorated with flowers and is then carried in procession in a palanquin (palki), with religious music. Also, people decorate their homes to add on the festive feel. In the evening, Antim Ardas and Bhog are performed in the Gurdwaras, followed by distribution of Prasad among the devotees.
Other Activities Of The Day
- Special open lunch (Langar) is arranged at Gurdwaras for people of all religions. Devotees serve the food with spirit of service (Seva) and devotion (Bhakti).
- Nagar Kirtans or holy processions are taken out in many cities as a part of the festivity.
- Religious slogans and hymns are chanted which add fervor to the celebration.
- Special programmes are organized to promote spirit of Sikhism among the youth.
