Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most important festivals of the Hindus. It is celebrated on the fourth day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight), during the month of Bhadrapada. According to the scriptures, it is believed that Lord Ganesha was born on this day and this is the reason why it is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi. Also known as Kalank Chaturthi and Danda Chaturthi, the festival is celebrated as Ganesh Utsav by the people of Maharashtra with a great enthusiasm and devotion.

Why is it forbidden to see the Moon on Ganesha Chaturthi?
It is strictly prohibited to look at the Moon on the day of Ganesha Chaturthi. Seeing the Moon inflicts a one year long curse on the person who does it and the person becomes a victim to false allegations which might disrupt his life. Even Lord Krishna was not spared of this curse. If by mistake, someone looks at the Moon, then there is no need to fret yourself. There is a mantra, which needs to be chanted for 28, 54 or 108 times to guard yourself from the consequences of looking at the Moon. Reciting the 57th Adhyaya of 10th Skanda of Srimad Bhagwata also helps in getting rid of the Dosha (curse).
Mantra to eliminate the Chandra Darshan Dosha :
Sinha prasenamavadheet sinho jaambavataa Hatah|
Sukumarak maa rodistava hyesha syamantaka ||
( सिंहःप्रसेनमवधीत् , सिंहो जाम्बवता हतः।
सुकुमारक मा रोदीस्तव, ह्येष स्यमन्तकः।। )
